These photos were in a Hot Rod feature in Ture's Automobile Yearbook from 1952. Is this the same chassis that is in the Spencer Roadster today, or was it for another car?
These are very cool pictures, they must have been taken early on in the reconstruction. The front framehorns are gone, exhaust is thru the frame rails but still has a flathead installed. I have been studying this car for several years and haven't seen these pics before. Thanks
i forgot yes it appears to be the chassis under the current car look at this thread for a photo pulling it out.spencer roadster ( 1 2 3 view all)
glad a few people saw this post. Notice the front of the frame rails have a bump or shallow Z's section over the spring. Is this feature on the car today?
It's sort of like the bump that Bass did on the Wade Roadster. I would not be surprised if that's where he got the idea. Bass is pretty astute when it comes to the history of Hot Rodding.
True. I guess I mentioned the possibility because I feel like it would be a compliment rather then a copy. He may have not known at all about that feature on the DS roadster and then it would go to show he's in the right frame of mind huh? Thinking like a true Traditionalist.
oh hell no.. imitation is the greatest form of flattery dude... specially off a car the likes of the Doane Spencer
Exactly. On another note, I would like to see any pics of the restoration of the Doane Spencer roadster as well as any vintage images that people might have. I have always placed it high on my list but really do not know much about it's construction.
What is the date on the two Dry Lake photos? The front frame horns are still on the car at that time. Do you think he built the frame in my original post and just placed the roadster body on it? ............. If so could there be 1 1/2 Doane Spencer Roadsters out there? Here is the magazine cover the article was in.
Always my favorite . There were some good color pics in a newer R&C mag when Bruce Meyer got it restored. I cant remember what issue though.
Photos from August 21 1948. I have had the "True's Automotive Yearbook" for years and never noticed Doane's Chassis Shots.
Glad I posted it, I file stuff by cover memory, not published date. I hope everyone understands how great it is to have the HAMB to unload all this stuff we keep filed in our heads.
I am too! This is the reason I am on the HAMB to get all this type of info and also share what I have. I have the R&C article from '96 with other chassis pics, I will post soon.
Absolutely stunning. His '55 T-Bird that Doane built later is a sight to behold too. His cars were always black, and always Ford. Neat!
I don't know how it all fits together, but a guy named Kirk White had a roadster in Florida, in the nineties, that was supposed to be Doane Spencer's roadster, but don't think it was the original. A second roadster assembled from original Spencer pieces but not completed by Spencers in his lifetime?. I don't any facts other than this roadster sat in a tent next to our vendor tent in Daytona and it was a roadster and T bird, said to be Spencers. Maybe someone can supply the facts.
I'll make apoint of posting magazine covers in the future if there is a magazine feature article worth posting. Funny how we all remember covers, and how a feature looked, I just do both at the same time.
Kirk White had the first two Dry Lakes cars ever shown in AACA competion at Hershey, the green Ray Brown car (my favorite) and a black '32 Roadster as well. Can't remember the owner of the black car but it may be the one you saw.
