This is why I love Hot Rods, especially traditional Hot Rods on the HAMB. You get history, engineering, many ways to do one thing and a great discussion of it all in one thread! I am really looking to do the Doanne Spencer/Rolling Bones "look" on my next roadster even though its been done hundreds of times because I just love the "look"! "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"!

The only time to go to Branson is when the swap meet is going on in Springfield.

  11. Fun is fun, but it's time to let R-B off the hook after 70 years.
Also Doane Spencer is in the G***up Hall of Fame with the scale model Roadster of his Roadster, very cool! -- You do nice work R-B.

    Thread is not about McMullin!!!

I had the chance to visit George Poteet collection last year in November. I went out to lunch and had the experience to ride in the car with Allen who is taking care of his collection a cool ride.

The point I was trying to make with an earlier post was the fact that the Doane Spencer car had MANY looks, all depends on what year you took the photo. The Rolling Bones cars are what they are, only the Y Block car has seen changes as far as I know. Bob:)

Ken and Keith are modest guys and real craftsman and not some ego idiots. They have always given credit to Spencer and his style. When I first met them they willingly gave me all sorts of info and tips on how to set up their style of front end.

This thread/discusion/cat fight makes me think of a Cadillac Motor Car adverti*****t from 1915. It's en***led "The penalty of Leadership". A copy of it hung in my various offices prior to retirement and now my shop. It was given to me by a former ***ociate and senior executive 30+ years ago. The text reads:

“In every field of human endeavour, he that is first must perpetually live in the white light of publicity. Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When a man’s work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be mediocre, he will be left severely alone – if he achieves a masterpiece, it will set a million tongues a-wagging. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. Whatsoever you write, or paint, or play, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surp*** or to slander you unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. Long, long after a great work or a good work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious, continue to cry out that it cannot be done. Spiteful little voices in the domain of art were raised against our own Whistler as a mountback, long after the big world had acclaimed him its greatest artistic genius. Mul***udes flocked to Bayreuth to worship at the musical shrine of Wagner, while the little group of those whom he had dethroned and displaced argued angrily that he was no musician at all. The little world continued to protest that Fulton could never build a steamboat, while the big world flocked to the river banks to see his boat steam by. The leader is ***ailed because he is a leader, and the effort to equal him is merely added proof of that leadership. Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depreciate and to destroy – but only confirms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. There is nothing new in this. It is as old as the world and as old as human p***ions – envy, fear, greed, ambition, and the desire to surp***. And it all avails nothing. If the leader truly leads, he remains – the leader. Master-poet, master-painter, master-workman, each in his turn is ***ailed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. That which is good or great makes itself known, no matter how loud the clamor of denial. That which deserves to live – lives. “

    (Saturday Evenening Post, January 1915)

    Nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!

So I take your post means you support giving the credit for this front end style to Doane Spencer? Or are you tossing everything you just posted out the window, and support giving the credit (Which I dont see THEM asking for, by the way) to your buddies? Or are you saying the Rolling Bones first did this front end style in the mid forties, and Doane copied it from them? I'm a little unclear here.

This isn't about attacking somebody or jealosy in any way. I LOVE the rolling Bones cars! It is however, about protecting our history in this little corner of the world. Just like the rest of our country, hot rod history gets swept under the rug everyday. This is kinda a new phenomanon for us, 'cause we used to be a small group of weirdos that nobody else cared about. With the advent of the internet and television shows about our subject matter, anyone can play. Now it becomes a matter of keeping the record straight about where things come from.

The general mindset of this country the last decade or so has been that yesterdays news has no bearing on today, and is of no value. That's just not true and never will be. I for one value the accomplishments of those that came before and will always stand to remember them. Pretty simple really...

I think at this point we can sum up this entire thread pretty quickly. The question: Should this style of front end be called the "Doane Spencer front end" or the "Rolling Bones" front end?

No one, including the guy from the Rolling Bones, seems to be debating whether Doane did it first and the Rolling Bones copied it. The Rolling Bones guy clearly credits Spencer. So it seems to be his "fan base" that feels Doane Spencer should be stripped of the credit for this style of front end. Lets summarize the stated reasons why they feel this is right.

    5) I never heard of Doane Spencer until I joined the HAMB, and all the magazines call it the "Rolling Bones" style front end.

    4) Doane did it sixty years ago, thats a long time ago, f*ck history.

    3) the Rolling Bones guys are really cool, and they are my friends, so Doane Spencer doesnt deserve credit for this style of front end.

    2) Someone MIGHT have done this before Doane did it. I'm not sure about that, I dont have any photos or do***entation to prove it, or even suggest that it might be true, but thats good enough for me.

    1) And by far the best one so far, most hot rods have dropped axles.

Guess that about sums it up, eh?

Yea, but if I thought of the idea before I ever saw the Rolling Bones cars or heard of Doane Spencer, I can take credit for it can't I? :D

This was very intersting to read. Rest in peace Doane ya built some kool **** in your day. Your roadster will allways be # 1 with me.
Ken & Keith, you guys build the best looking hot rods out there in todays world. To me they look like they are going 200MPH setting still,
We all know who started this look, Ken & Keith just brought it back to us all to love or hate.
