I have a question that has been addressed to some extent before. But rather than dredging up a zombie thread (the one I was reading was from 2012), I figured I would try to get a bit more specific. I picked up a 325 Dodge hemi tha has a 315 head (casting number 1828129) and a 241 head (casting number 1328362). Obviously, those are significantly mismatched. My options to fix this situation are 1) get a pair of 270 heads that are available to me, 2) for slightly more money than the pair of 270 heads I can buy one 315 head (I don't know the casting number) or 3) I may be able to come up with a single 270 head. So the question is, does anyone have real world flow numbers for the various heads? Has anyone had significant experience looking at the various heads side-by-side, to be able to tell me how similar or dissimilar the ports are? I don't mind spending some extra time to open up for a larger valve, if the rest of the port is equal. Feel free to weigh in. I know it's my choice eventually, but I'd love to have a little more info than I currently have.
Nothing technical, just because I was a dumb 17 yr old kid, when handed a '56 Dodge hemi cpe. I was told that the engine ( 315" ) was a design for Nascar. Another kid had a '57 hemi ( 325" ) and I could out-drag him at the stoplights.
Ok, so I'll lay out some details to help you out. Yes the heads from 241/270 Hemi can be used on a 315/325 block, but you'll have to use a 315/325 intake since the raised block deck height makes the early intakes too narrow. However, the valves are much smaller on the early heads, and there have been cases where the 241 heads don't fully seal at the inner edges due to differences in castings. So you'd be money well spend to locate a matching 315/325 head to complete the engine as it was originally designed. As to Tom's post, the 315CI V8 was offered in all 1956 Dodges with a single WCFB 4bbl carburetor, and offers a 30hp performance gain over the 4bbl 315 Poly-head V8; while the 2x4 D500-1 315ci option was available, it was for race applications only with solid linkage and no water crossover in the intakes. The 325CI Hemi was seen in 1957 Dodges and were produced in far greater quantities than the previous year so many 325 Hemis exist in comparison to their 1956 brethren.
