It was a 39 Chevy with a 1953 241 Dodge Hemi and a Dodge 3 speed o/d transmission. I haven’t seen one of transmission since. Has anyone ever used one of these?

I've got one that goes behind my 56 Desoto Hemi. It came out of a 50 something Dodge pickup so I don't know it's exact original home.
One of the local farm equipment manufactures ate up all of the Mopar standard transmissions with that flange on the tail shaft years ago on their manure spreaders. They bolted a sprocket to the flange and made up a hub to bolt a sprocket to on the input shaft. That resulted in 3 speed shit spreaders.

I put one [not a Dodge, but a '55 Chev. pass car trans.] in a 57 Chev. pick up for a guy about 5 years ago. It was a ball to drive. As I remember, it had a solenoid activated pawl, and a governor that kept it deactivated until about 28 MPH. You pulled or pushed a large belden wire cable [I used a truck PTO unit from a local ag store] to engage OD. Once you hit 28MPH you floored the throttle. There was a momentary switch on the throttle linkage which interrupted the ignition circuit long enough to take the load off the transmission input shaft. The slack in the gears allowed the solenoid to engage the planetary. It was just like a passing gear in an automatic, and quick. Over the governed speed, you could split shift. In OD, you were in free wheeling - no engine braking - bad on hills, but great in traffic. To leave OD, you pulled or pushed the cable [I don't remember which], lifted off the throttle, and were back to normal. Some of the 50's and 60's MOTOR manuals have great sections, including theory and wiring. They'll give you a clearer, more accurate description than I have. I made brackets and mounted an old Hurst Mystery Shifter. The car trans. was exactly the same length as the truck trans.

 

not really using them - but have and know of them...one with my 241 and the other is behind my D500's 315...it was comparable to what others were running at the time tuff wise...
