IMG_4156.jpeg Does the F1 box have holes for a cotter pin to retain the nut? If not how do I keep this nut from ever backing off?

    Thanks in advance

That giant lock washer should do the job.

Yes, the lock washer is the typical factory answer. However if you want some additional peace of mind, you could: use Loctite, or drill a hole and use a cotter key or safety wire.

You would be surprised how little torque it takes to shear a cotter pin. Ran into this problem at an ATV manufacturer I used to work for: 22 mm (7/8") axle hub nut would back off and blow right through the cotter pin under certain loading conditions. I set up a quick bench test and found it only took 25 to 30 ft-lbs to shear the pin. This was on a nut that was torqued to 300 ft-lbs at installation. We ended up stamping a steel plate that was sandwiched between the wheel and the hub, engaged the wheel studs, and had a 12 point pattern cut out that fit over the nut - problem solved. We also used nylon lock nuts AND red loctite in other areas. The dealers and service folks hated it, but the amount of warranty complaints for premature loosening of hardware dropped to virtually zero.

These are effective in the vibration filled environment of OT Shovelheads:

Don’t know what you guys are worried about. Only a few multi-million Gemmer boxes in Fords survived with the lock washer.

I mean, just try getting a pitman off AFTER you pull the nut/lock washer and you'll see, that system (designed by or for FORD) is perfectly suited for use.
