I am in the market for rims for my 65 skylark, but am planning a disc brake conversion in the near future as well. I know the torq thrust D's were made for disc brake cars, but I am biased towards original style straight spokes and want to run T71R's in 15x7 with the basic 11" disc kit. I want to make sure the caliper will fit with the 4" back space... Thanks, Greg
Back space generally isn't the issue, it's how much the caliper sticks out beyond the wheel mount surface to interfere with the back of the spokes. Sometimes a thin spacer between the rotor and the wheel will help, as will paring off any protrusions on the caliper. Charlie
Mine are perfect!!! My TT-IIs fit perfect over my 4 wheel disks with vintage JFZ calipers, racing rotors attached to a Winters Quickchange with full floating hubs! I could've gone with 15's all the way around however I couldn't get the proper negative backspacing of 6.25 inches unless I went with the 16" dia. x 10" wide for the rear wheels! Max for the 15" was 5.25"... Built on a budget and kicking High Dollar ***es!!!
Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll have to wait until I order the brakes, that or build up the drums as best I can. wingnuts, your car looks bad***, dig the motor especially!
I have 4 inch backspace 15's on a lincoln versailles disc rear end with plenty of clearance. The front are also chevy standard disc kit with 3.5 inch backspace. They fit fine. I have found that the rear end needed new longer lugs because the torq thrusts are pretty thick. I went with the moroso 3" racking lug kit and it worked beautifully! Let me know if you want pics or measurements.
I am running 14 X 6 generic 5 spoke rims (there is no name or identification on these rims) on my 1965 Buick Sportwagon. The front brakes have been converted to power disc brakes. I have not had any issues with this rims & the disc brakes. I have been thinking about hanging some rear disc on the 12 bolt rear end. Good luck, Sean
Not to derail the thread, but . . . Wingnutz, your roadster is a looker. I think because you didn't go too far with the channel. Wondering too how wide the rear axle is. If it's a 'standard' width, not narrowed axle, using the 6.25 backspace wheels looks like a good way to go if a builder didn't want to narrow the rear axle. By standard I mean the commonly found nine inch 60's era pickup axle which is 61 1/2" drum flange to drum flange. "Built on a budget and kicking High Dollar ***es!!!" Yes indeed.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As to the original posters question, I run slot mags and found that they fit ok on 14" slots in 7", 6" and 5 1/2" widths. About 3" backspace on all. 11" Mustang disc brake rotor's and calipers fit, but it's close. 10 1/2" Camaro disc brake rotor's and calipers fit a little better.
Mine measured close to 63.5 inches but I didn't want to narrow the rear for a couple of reasons...: 1st was because I was channeling the body and needed the width to clear the ever expanding body towards the top and the second issue was to cover the "Floating" hubs, drive plates and disk brakes of the quickchange! If you expand on the photo's you'll notice how well the Positive rear back spacing looks right in line with the front wheels and both house the brakes perfectly without looking Heavy or Awkward.
