Does bare metal needprimed before rustproofing..?

My 61 Ford just got NOS headlight chrome rings ...the old ones just disintegrated...

When I got the new ones I could see why.. no paint or rustproofing on the backs

i want to protect these ones and like to know if I should prime ..[paint then rustproof or will rustproofing all I need

I use the undercoat spray can dry type from rust-ileum..

Spray with ospho first and let dry . Then prime and paint. I would do both sides like this

 

If it's raw steel, use Ospho, Picklex or any good metal etch, followed by good primer and paint.

 

If they are chrome rings, they should have the same plating on the whole part, just not as polished. You can't dip a part into a chrome tank without the liquid covering the whole thing.

That said, I'd still clean the backside very thoroughly with lacquer thinner, then prime and paint with a spraycan of Krylon or Rustoleum. No nead for thick undercoating on a headlight ring.

 

Yes your right this is the secound time I bout NOS and the chrome plateing was poorly applied!

I called my body shop man and he recommend to have them rechromed or if I wanted to try sanding the backs and applying self etching primer then ,, paint them (which I will with dull aluminumn)

so far I used th e self etching primer and it sure looks like it will work becuase some of the paint went on my hand and go jo would not take it off! ...DANiel
