Heres my Model A question of the week Building a full fendered 29 Sedan with an A grill and no hood (most of the time) and plan to either build or use an aftermarket perimeter frame as my starting point. Been looking thru pics and have noticed that most Model A's have sunken firewalls to accept a SBC but some have not and I would like to know how they got it to fit (stretched frame, radiator more forward, ?????) without doing a 3 or 4inch firewall inset. I really do not want to sink it and would love to fit it without. Can it be done. If I stretch the frame a few inches to gain engine compartment room will it keep me from being able to buy a hood top (I would like to have the option of having one especially for long road trips). Does anyone make a lengthened hood and sides. (I do not have the talent to make one myself and do not know if I want to spend the huge dollars to have someone build a one off) So what are my options. If I want a hood, am I stuck with a sunken firewall. any pics of Model A firewalls or with SBC installed would be great for ideas
You will have to extend running boards too. Most A manufactures will extend frame at additional cost around 150 to 2oo dollars more
haganstreetrods.com- ad says they can make one up to 4" longer than original seems reasonably priced-i don't know much 'bout Model A stuff..... Cody
Thanks, I have looked at Hagans add but did not pick up that they will do extensions. If I do go a little longer I will stretch the running boards to fit.. As I said I am looking for options. I may just have to wait until I mock it up and see just how much room i have and how much I have to relocate the firewall.. I hate giving up the leg room...
An extended hood is considered to be a one off cause you have to make measurements then send it to builder to have made I will e-mail you pics of my recessed firewall
Rootlieb makes them. It's a very common deal and I have one on my 31 on 32 rails. Pic below. Just pick the one piece hood top you want and add $50. to the cost. Least it was $50. about 18 months ago. Measuring is easy. Get the grille shell/radiator set up where you want it and measure down the center top. That's all that's needed. As an example, a stock 31 hood is 31 5/8". The hood on my 31 is 32 3/8". As far as the hood sides go, make your own. Go to Tech O' Matic and look under "Hoods." We had a good discussion on this a while back and most of the info is there. You can knock out your own hood sides with minimal tools for about $20. total. Louvers and other cl***y stuff extra....
I had a buddy who had a 29 .........same year as yours..... He had Tom Felver (Beaufort) chop the top to make the p***enger side windows the same height as a stock 32.... Then I made some brackets that moved the radiator (Walker...for a 32) forward 2 and 1/2 inches. Put a 1932 shell and insert on it. Called Rootlieb.......asked for a Model A hood......2 and 1/2 inches longer......with 1932 style vents in it, to fit a 32 shell front and a Model A cowl. About $125 to $150 more than a stock 29 hood. He used a ZIP pump ( like BORO and I run ) and did not butcher the firewall up. He had a MSD small HEI distribor.... No problems....fit just like a original hood should have......looked good but he could NOT run a headlight bar. He mounted the headlight on the fender (1934 Ford style mounting)....
Thanks for the info on this... Randy, I did plan to run the ZIP as it seems like a great way to go...
on my 30 full fendered truck I got away with pushing my radiator 2" forward and adding a "V" to the headlight bar. Didn't stretch the ch***is. The radiator is mounted in front of the cross member and the 34 comercial shell covers it. I cannot run the splash apron though. TZ
