Thank you for the good suggestions, know my list has grown to more than ten. Lol!

I really like two tones like the Chevys but Mercury's just don't have the stainless to break it up. Thanks for the suggestion.

Merc may not have the trim for a 2 tone but Buick did

  5. The last thing one should put on a Merc if they are trying to be original in anyway. So overused. Probably more Mercs out there with this trim than Buicks.

Mick, just found this thread and read it through. Lot's of good suggestions. I'm excited for you!

Number one thing ... don't change the '56 Plymouth wheel covers. I love 'em. :D:D:D . (full disclosure, I sold them to Mick and I know he has a nice collection to run whatever he feels like on a particular day)

@chevsotolac has some stuff in the classifieds that would be worth looking at. But don't wait long. I'm in the camp that a nice straight stainless line down the length of a car really accentuates it.

Mid door level is common placement, especially on 49-51 Mercs. The stock location just below the rear quarter separation is a no brainer. But also could look good mounted lower, say from mid-front-wheel-well and back across the door and maybe even a little bit onto the quarter, stopping before the skirt. Think Packard trim, about 1953?

personally I think your car looks pretty good in your first post. I will agree that
    • Front of the stock '51 skirts need to be straightend.
    • and I’m not a huge fan of taildragger’s.
    • and I would think that a lighter primer with some color to it would look good.

In post 62 above one of the pix I posted was deleted. I'm guessing that was done because the wheels/tires aren't hamb friendly. My apologies for that faux pas. I was only trying to show the color and never considered the wheels/tires.

So below is the same pickup showing the color but not showing the non-friendly items. In my opinion this red and the copper/bronze are the colors I'd pick for Mick's Merc.

...and @Bandit Billy's burgundy; of which I have no pix saved on my computer.

I agree that a Pontiac scoop over the headlight wouldn't look complimentary. I'd try to accentuate the cars existing classic lines. I think thats where a lot of restylers go wrong. They try to make something different out of a car and ruin its overall shape to incorporate something different. Stick with refining and you can't go wrong. :)

I agree it would look kool.. If I was to do it I would have to concentrate on and early fifties build not a late 50s style. I need to try to stay with the right time period. I seem to chase a lot of squirrels with my thinking process.

We chased a lot of squirrels at The Gathering. Dave had to keep pulling me back. Good times.
