Do it all the time with three friends, choose your friends wisely and it works.

I'm about 50/50 on that deal. I did a race engine for a guy and he dry walled my garage. Set up a rear end for another guy and he wired my trailer for 110 and hung the lights. I love those deals but I've had a few where I did my end and the flip side never worked out. One guy in town has owed me $100 for 5 years and keeps telling mutual friends that he's gonna pay me one day and that I must be pissed, yea right.

I did another SBC race engine for a good friend. He was going to give me an old rusty 327 for my labor. He wanted to use a light duty, late model block I begged him not to use. Well, the block cracked and started loosing water where I ground the pan rail for the stroker crank. He totally blamed me and we are no longer friends.

I guess I'm saying these things can be good and bad.

It may work fine for others, but I can't see myself getting an even trade. You would need two people with the exact degree of finish on any part of the build. I an NOT one of the "Ok, nobody will ever see it." types. Bob

I have collected all the parts to build my wifes 58 GMC by trading. The key thing is to KNOW who you're trading with. The few guys in the circle we keep are all trust worthy good hot rod guys. We trade services, parts, entire vehicles, whatever it takes to get the right person what they want. So far I've been burnt once, but we rectified that situation

  6. Yeah, most of the time.

  7. Im far to trusting, so no it hardly works for me. People are very quick to forget they owe you one:mad:

  8. I have one friend I can do that with and have for close to 40 years. If he needs something I take care of it. if I need something he takes care of it we dont bill each other we are just there when the other needs it. Big jobs we pay but small stuff we just take care of it knowing tis a long road without a turn. Never had it work with anyone else though.

Use to with good results with a friend, He did upholstery, I had a paint & body shop. For years I painted all his cars, he did my interiors. He closed shop, went back to school and became a doctor, I'm too healthy to trade with him anymore!
Every time I've traded work in the last 20 years or so I've been screwed so now I just trade work for money.

    Hasn't worked in a while.

  11. I have several great friends who i swap/barter work for work.
I once got screwed by a guy on here, (with only one post) and ive learnt a real good lesson. I knew when we got into the deal that the guy was a fraud, but did it anyway.
Now, same guy reaping what he sowed. lol.

I been screwed lots, been helped out lots, it works out sometimes. What I do now is, trade for skills, you got what I need, deal, else its cash, or no deal.

I am still correcting the trade deals I have made. Either redoing the fab, or doing the body and paint. I will trade parts back and forth with one friend, but otherwise It hasn't worked for me, and has definately lowered my trust level. The other thing I had trouble with, was when trading cars, I could trade up or down, but once I did the trade deal, I could never get cash for the car.
