Does wind change volume of sound?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Anchorboy46, Nov 4, 2010.

  1. If you are driving into the wind,is your rod any louder or softer than driving away from the wind? Does wind carry sound? Does wind muffle sound?

I'm sure wind speed affects the ability of sound to travel but most likely not significantly enough for us to notice, it is more likely that if we have a perception of a sound delay or a tone difference is noticeable that it is due to the way the air flow is reacting to the shape of our ears. Try taking your ears and make deer or horse ears out of them by cupping them and focusing them at an object, a very noticeable amplification occurs.

Yah its called the doppler effect. On a funny side note, this old man i new told me about this time he put a header on his race car that pointed/exited forward so it sounded like a four banger comin and goin, and confused lots of people. Could of just been the old man in him but i believe him.

Doppler effect affects the pitch. You know the pitch of a train increases as it comes towards you and then goes lower as it goes away from you. At least that is what I was taught. But that was a long time ago.

I know sound will carry farther when you are down wind. I like about 3 blocks from a highway. If the wind comes from the north I can hear the highway. If the wind is from most other directions I can't hear it.

I'll say this, and I've talked about it many times...I've worked on and around airports for just about my entire adult life. The normal noises that emanate from a busy airport sound very different when comparing a hot, still, summer day with a cold, windy winter day in the same place. Has to do with density of air and wind direction. DD

I do, this is good stuff. I said who cares about school because I'm good with my hands, I should have been good with my head.

You got that right Johnny, when I was a kid I could care less about this kind of stuff, my head hurt thinking about it, well, now it's time that the body hurts way worse than the head. Would like to use the head for more than just denting low boards in a basement nowadays.

I realy don't know about that, but one thing is for sure my T-Bucket is loud no matter what as the open headers end right at the seat, so it's always in your ear, you can not even talk when your driving it.

The sound waves will still propagate the same
the wind will cause a pertubation affecting pitch
clarity , etc. Also the density will affect it.

More like it changes the direction of sound, not specifically the volume. Sound is absolutely directional. Look at air horns in P.A. speakers for example. High frequencies needs to be directed. Low frequencies, are(not sure if this is the right terminology) omni-directional, meaning they travel in every direction.

Sure, when we drive our hot rods on a calm day they are way quieter than on a day with strong side winds when the noise noticeably increases Why, scientific answer ,Dunno , it just happens.Live with it.

Considering that sound moves in waves through air, I would say yes.
