What the fuck does a theme have to do with a time frame for a car

  2. Theme? WTF? Well, I gave it a lot of thought and I really considered going with a Sound of Music theme but then I thought it might be too girly, even though Penis Van Lesbian...er...I mean, Dick Van Dyke was in it, or was that Mary Poppins he was in?

My wife wanted to go with a Care Bears theme, but Care Bears are for pussies. I figured that I would go for a more early 60s, period correct look so I went with a traditional Davey Crockett theme...you know...big flintlock shifter with a coonskin cap and a metal-flake woodgrain dash. It would fit more with my car... because my car is really a truck and Davey was more of a truck kind of guy.

For my next project, I'm going to build a early-60s Plymouth Valiant station wagon with a slant 6 'cause I really want that "owned by a unemployed, tweeker, hair band drummer in the early 80's" type of look...even though wouldn't really be that trad. I'll put a few different color primer spots over the original beige paint and maybe add some pin striping to make it a real hot rod.

    Yeah, that's my theme.

  3. Don't put a camper on it unless you put a matress in the back. I mean hell if the kid is driving it to school with a camper he may as well have the rest of the benifits. :)

I was probably raised a little different than a lot of the fellas. I don't recall the Ol' man ever driving around with a car in primer very long if at all. I was taught that there was a basic progression to building a car. Drivetrain before paint, paint before interior.

Its hard to do today, but I used to try and find my cars or bodies with the best paint I could. Stock paint was better than no paint or butched paint. I knew that everything I had was going to go into making it run better or run at all.

I think the fella meant theme as in time frame for his build. Like in '60s style as opposed to say '70s street beast.

gray or red primer, but isn't red primer different than it used to be? i think its more brown now. whats the right red?

  6. It depends on the manufacturer. We called it red led but it was actually red oxide primer, some was more red than others, it ranged from reddish to brownish.

vampires and unicorns! pre 64 of course.

  11. This thread seems to be pissing off some real HAMB traditionalists for some reason:mad:. Hell I was having a good time reading some of the comments, until "What the fuck" plus a couple others got pissed about wasting their time.
In '62 my high school car ('50 Ford coupe) was white primer lightly sanded down, clear coated with flames on the front hood and sides. My Hot Rod ('30 Ford coupe was grey primer).
Hope this dosen't offend someone

they like to think that their car is a reflection of themself's, and themes arn't badass.

  13. Nah, not pissing me off. Sorry about my smart-ass post. I see what the OP was getting at. Maybe it's just the term "theme" that feels a little ridiculous to me...it's like we're going to play "dress-up" or throw a "Gone with the Wind" party, instead of building a car. It's probably just me. I can see building to an era, but does a hot rod need a theme?

I enjoyed the posts for the most part too. I guess I'm feeling "smart assey" today.

  14. Well I am seriously offended. If it ain't pastel tinted primer it ain't traditional.

Actually I have always wanted a periwinkle car, I haven't a clue what that is but I like the name. ;)

    Saxman,
I'd offer to play dress up with ya but then folks would talk about us. :D:D:D
I understand where you are comming from, theme sounded a little funny to me before I opened the thread, but once I figured out where he was comming from it was different. The OP just hasn't caught onto the lingo yet. I think he'll be alright.

It's funny how we laugh at "posers" now, but in the 60's there were lots of rodders building cars that they wanted to look like their hero's car. I remember friends having hood scoops on their hoods, but afraid to cut a hole, so you could see it wasn't working. I also remember guys having cutouts at their front wheelwells that weren't hooked to the exhaust, or fake sidepipes. Lots of guys with cheater slick that had puny engines that wouldn't turn over stock tires.
Everybody built their car with a theme, and enjoyed them every day! The only guys we really made fun of were the one who did nothing to their cars!

my theme is rust. so far, i've nailed the look.

  28. Ha, I remember one of the magazines perhaps "Popular Hot Rodding" but maybe not, ran an article on things to make your car look faster. one of the suggestions was to paint a coffee can white and then screw it standing up to the back of your front fenderwell to look like you had fenderwell headers. it was less than a week that a couple of cars in the high school parking lot had coffee can header collectors. :D

One of the fellas bought a '60 Ford 2 door. It was white and that wasn't considered to be a desirable color. he got a can of copper paint because he thought it would look like Hawaiian Bronze which was a desirable color. Painted it with a brush and it looked like it had been painted with a broom. He got ribbed a little, but all said and done he got lots of chicks in his copper Ford.
