not only does my wife encourage my bad habits but during the show season she locates cruise ins and shows for us. within weeks of our first date she was in the car port with me changing vale cover gaskets on asmall block chevy. she shares all aspects of hod rodding with me from drag racing to just browsing the local junk yards.

Haha you said it, hard to find a good young girl that appreciates the time, work, thought and ability it takes to build an old car from scratch. They mostly tend to think its just some old car and its dirty and greasy.

I've gone through a lot of girls, most don't stick around for more than a few months. When they first come around they are totally in to it. They want me to put the passenger seat on my Harley so they can go for a ride with me, they want me to take the mustang out so we can cruise around and are always egging me on to street race, and they want to know when they can help me with the model A. After a few months or so they are tired of all the time I spend in the garage or at work, tired of always lifting to hood and checking oil, fluids, whatever, and tired of having to wait 45 minutes to go for a ride on the harley so I can put the passenger seat and pegs on, check the pressure, check the oil, check the plugs, etc.etc. They like the glam, but don't like the requirements.
Although there have been a few female friends that seemed genuinly interested in it. They liked going for long pointless cruises with an occasional random ice cream stop, and had no problem at all waiting for the car to cool down before starting it again or the occasional oil stain on the "nice" pair of pants. Too bad I was too dumb to date them.... :/

  10. I got lucky and found a gal that used to go to the drags with me. She would help me get the car ready for bracket racing and would make sure that I ate while I was there just so that she could spend the day with me. Soon after we started dating, I told her "I don't smoke, I drink MAYBE a beer or two a month, I don't gamble or do drugs. If you can put up with old cars, you've got it made!" She agreed and life has been okay ever since. We've had our problems, sure, but we've also had some GREAT times thanks to old cars. Once when we were picking up a parts car from behind a guy's garage WAY out in the country where it was REALLY dark, I asked her to sit on the back of the trailer so that she could shine the spotlight down the guy's lane so that I could back he trailer up to the car. She still jokes about that, and it was every bit of 10 years ago. Now, we have our detatched garage decorated like an old service station, a real traffic light hanging on the back of the house that is connected to my motion detector light by the driveway, a small chunk of a 55 Pontiac buried in one of her flower gardens (ala "Cadillac Ranch"). Back when we were first married, her daily drivers were the same cars that I had bought in various states of repair and ugliness and we did "fluff & buffs" on them until we finally had enough money to buy her something decent.
They're still out there though! We just had a gorgeous 22 year old redhead start in our office recently and she admitted that she was a huge gearhead and does about 90% of the work on her own cars. Unfortunately she's into the tuners, but hey, that's what she was brought up on!

  11. Hell Yes!! My wife has a brain tumor and started Kellys Hot Rod Parts after she lost her job due to her health problem. When I met her in the early 70s she was a counter person at her Dads NAPA store. We have been running crazy in the car thing for years, including building Hot Rod and Car Craft feature cars in the late 70s. She loves roadsters and never complained about my no window, heater or wiper policy. She is truly an old school hot rod girl and togeather we have passed this lifestyle onto both our sons and our daughter. You can visit Jeanne on her website at www.kellyshrparts.com

seven years in and she's starting to come around. I told her the next car she can drive and she liked that. She likes road trips and beer just as much as I do.

is she into it? nah, not really. but she doesn't hate it. i like the fact that she's not all that down with it. gives me a chance to do what i want and not be f'd with. i'm not trying to get all up in her shit when she's out shopping for expensive clothes or stupid shit i don;t care about. it's a balance. i do think it's kind of cool though when she expresses some interest every now and then, but i'd like to leave it at that.

My wife has been in the scene with me for 36 years with me. She has supported me and given me good advice and encouragement in 20+ builds. Never bitches about the money I spend because it never comes out of household. She really enjoys going to car shows unless she has to get up early. Then she whines a little
Overall I have a great hot-rod-chick who is still very hot in my eyes.

  17. My Missus was kind of indifferent a while back but I think I'm slowly winning her over with the promise of something like this.

That's if I ever get my truck finished! (Which she..incidently, bought me as a present!)

  18. I solve the problem this way - don't have one, don't go out of my way to look for one. No arguments and more money to spend on cars. No sex, either, but I figure that's not much different from being married, except I have to do my own laundry. No pun intended. Only bad thing is one of my buddies constantly ribs me about being gay. But he has at least three girlfriends at once, so I seem weird to him.

  19. Mine drives a 64 Valiant daily and would not have it any other way...........she is a keeper.........

Same here. Though only 27 years together. She bought me parts for birthdays and Christmas just to get FrankenVega going.
If she cant come with me, she'll follow me up there later.
She'd like me to build her a car so we can go as a team.

I like to think I groomed her in to liking Hot Rods, but now I think I created a monster. My tudor isn't even done yet and she wants me to build her a car!

My wife is pretty clueless about cars. I had to explain the difference between a tire and a wheel to her today. However, she understands that my old car obsession keeps me happy so she is supportive as much as she can be. She usually comes along to summertime weekend cruise-ins. One time she even pointed out a great looking 41 Ford 2 sedan and said she wants a car like that. I still get the "are going out to the garage again?" comments...but she sure didn't mind when I was able to replace the bad alternator on her car with one I pulled from the junkyard for $40.

My girlfriend is into the scene, she has her eye on a 48 Fleetline for herself. She's a photographer so she love the shows as much as me and we end up comparing our pictures after the show to see if either of us missed a cool car.
