Well, the new Chevelle drum/drum master I got from the parts store for the Fordillac is evidently bad. I tried bleeding the brakes, and couldn't get a firm pedal without pumping them once the other day. I thought it was a problem with my va***e pump and not sealing on the bleeders...

My wife tried to help me today, doing it the old fashioned way of pumping up the brakes, then cracking the bleeders, and no success. We pumped a quart of brake fluid thru the system, and ended up with a good pedal, but if it sets for 30 seconds or so, then two pumps gets the pedal up hard, and it'll drift back down to the floor. I bench bled it before hand too.

    So, back for another one...

The quality of reman parts has been going down hill for years. That's why I haven't bought any reman brake parts for 20 years or more.

I had same problem 4 yrs. ago. Couldn't even bench bleed the POS. After trying 3 remanufactured (in China) mc's, I finally ordered a BRAND NEW Raybestos mc . No problems yet. Now I avoid buying anything that is "remanufactured" overseas.

  4. When I redid the brakes on my DD I had that problem, too, the first M/C I bought turned out bad. This after I'd given up trying to bleed it (you really can't pedal bleed with the prop valve this truck has in it, it has to be gravity or vaccuum bled) and took it to a muffler shop (they advertised bleeding for $20, well worth it IMHO). So back for another - and it's still on the truck, although the brakes have never been 100% right, sometimes it pulls a little to one side because one front is grabbing harder than the other, and sometimes it shakes when I use the brake like I had a tire way out of balance or something (I"m guessing that might be the right rotor, which still has some weird rust pits in it - I've changed everything else but the left rear drum).

Of course I guess you shouldn't expect perfection from a $20 part that's been shipped halfway around the world after being ***embled by an 8-year old earning 10 cents a day.

  5. You did bench bleed it before installation, right???

I fought with one I bought at a swap meet for months for my '46. Yeah, I'll never do that again.
