Have any of you ever donated/loaned a car to a shop class? Did it work out? Here is the deal... Im thinking about loaning my 63 Chevy II to my old High School Shop Class so the kids can have a little fun building a older car. I would propose to buy all the parts and advise them what to buy. Its nothing fast but maybe...just maybe let them (along with me!!!) take it to our local High School Drags and run it. What are you guys and gals thoughts?
If you're donating the car, or "lending" the car to the kids, FOR the kids, then i'd say go for it. If you're going to get the car back eventually and you're picky about how the work is done on your car, then I wouldn't do it. Remember all the things you screwed up on your first car?.... lol.... Well, your car is going to be 15+ kids first car.
A local High school here in Central Minnesota built a drag car from a donated car, a Nova or Chevelle, I can't remember. It was maybe a high 13 second ride, nothing too extreme. Due to insurance issues, the school had the car destroyed before they even got to run it. The kids put their heart into the thing. The instructor was the most responsible and greatest guy I ever knew, he was going to drive, not the kids. The whole deal really sucked in the end. Be very careful if the car means anything to you. I think it is a great idea, but it could end badly.
Its just sitting in the around collecting dust. Im not to worried about them screwing it up. We all did! But, thats how we learned. Right?!?!
If you're not worried about a little 'incidental damage' go for it. We would have drooled for a project like that, but unfortunately our class also attracted some unsavory characters who could have cared less what it was they intentionally messed up for someone else... when it was discovered that a spark plug could potentially shatter side glass, there was some testing of that theory.
The dumbass's at my local high school would steal parts from it and f*ck it up.. depends on the high school I guess..
my pontiac was an aborted shop class project, i think they rebuilt the motor, brake system and serviced the trans, then did some body work, but when they chopped it they bit off a little more than they could chew, so it sat since 2000 or so with a terrible 3 inch chop, was pushed to the back of the lot, and then sold(or given) to a snap-on tools salesman, in which i bought it off of him (through egay) for 250 bucks it was striped of all glass, seats and trim. and some of the misc. engine parts were missing. i say maybe, but dont let them go too far. ha.
I sure would like to kick the guy in the balls that made that lame ass decision to smash that car and those kid's dreams.
donated 2 to a high school. early 80s. one year we donated them a 64 impala SS with buckets, console & a jerk stick that controlled 4 foreward gears rusty floor pans - A ONE OWNER complete driving unmolested car! another year we donated them a early 70s firebird ALSO A 4 SPEED! the impala we bought for like 200 bucks or maybe less? & i think (i dont remember) if i snagged a few parts off it or not? the engine was weak i remember that & i also remember pokin holes down the side with a body pick hammer as i had taken it out for a 4 speed beating & knocked the engine loose & was going to have it crushed or just sell it for 200 again or whatever when the school called & i thought 'hey stop over & look at this impala sitting out back you can have it it has a few holes down the side like its been shot & the engine smokes & rattles. i had no intrest (none) in impalas (still dont) --- 32-34 fords or 55-57 chevs or chevelles or corvettes is all i lived for. oh & 'short box chev pickups always had to have them around. the firebird had a title problem & they said they'd figure it out. both were restored or somewhat restored & auctioned off.
