I was honestly thinkin leave it until that pic. I say drop it and save the stock parts. Don't cut anything and drive the wheels off of it. Either way it's a top notch truck.

I would keep it stock as well. I hate you because it's in your garage & not mine! HA HA!.
Seriously though, nice truck, too nice to change.

    What a classy truck, but......

What might have been done to that truck if bought brand new by a hot rodder?

    Lowered?

    Dual Intake?

Super clean stocker with some hot rod in it's blood.

I always find it funny when there is a certain year/model that I'm not fond of and then one comes along that is spot on and totally crashes my ideas.

No, but you're welcome to come by my shop in Redford.

I'm through with TDC. I was done with it when they allowed tour busses to intermingle with the cruisers. How wonderful for the tourists to sit in air conditioned luxury while we breath the gawdawful diesel fumes. The final straw was when they allowed ice cream trucks to sell to the crowd from the curb lane. Every time the damn ice cream truck stopped the whole damn cruise stopped.

I'm sure it's fun from a spectators viewpoint but I couldn't imagine my big body crammed into that small cabin in 90°+ temps with no air conditioning moving at a snail's pace.

I call it the Dream Snooze. Bring on the hate.

    See you at Baker's, instead.

    What, no 350/350??

    What's up with that?

just kidding, get in her and drive the wheels off it but be ready for the 350 crowd at the local get together because they will tell you all sorts of stories as to why they ripped out a perfectly good Flathead because they a)couldn't find parts b)wanted an engine that was reliable and that would last for years (yeah right)
    c) it will be worth more with a 350 in it. d) want to run with the big dogs e)all the above.

I have been running stock/restored vehicles for years and those are some of the responses I've had when I pop the hood at the local cruise in.
The only mods I would/will do is to find better hiway gearing which may include installing a Ford 9" which allows you to 'run with the big dogs'. One of my recent finds (low mile 49 Mercury M47) came stock with a 450ish gear ratio which limits me to 45 or 50 sustained mph if I want to keep the V8 running cool. I'm not sure what ratio your truck has but let your temp gauge be your speedometer. As the rpms climb (due to stump puller rear ratios) so will your temp gauge. Curtailing the rpm range and slowing down a bit will be the answer to a climbing temp gauge.
Remember, when your 40 was created, there were very few actual paved roads and the national speed limit was 45mph on the best roads. Your 40 was designed to work and travel on the roads of that day. Keep this in mind when you are out and about and you shouldn't have a problem with the temp gauge.
Also and contrary to popular belief, replacing the rad cap with a 7 or 13 lb cap is not the answer to keeping the temp down as you try and pull 60mph for hours on end, changing the cap to 7 or 13lbs will actually introduce new problems that would not be present if the system was left stock (as designed). The engine and gearing are designed for the 1940 roads and speed limits.
..What I do is find a nice quite back road and observe temperatures at 45, 50 and 55mph and drive at the speed that the temp gauge allows.
My 39 1/2 ton (4:10ish ratio) seems to like 55 but the lower geared 49 Merc prefers 50 just in order to keep the 4:50 ish gear ratio from spinning the engine rpm into over heating conditions. ...I'm sure you'll find your trucks sweet spot soon enough....

Beautiful !,... Just drive the Pooo out of it !

  23. If you posted a thread on how to hot rod that truck the hate mail would be streaming in. It's a beautiful period piece, like what the older guys used to do in the late 40s and into the 50s. Chrome dual exhaust, bumper tips, color matched wheels, just perfect. I remember when my Dad bought his first new car, ( a 58 Impala, 348, tri-power, and Level Air.) He didn't have any extra money so he put chrome tips and pin striped the outer wheel rim, painted the vertical grille pieces black so it looked like a bar grille from 10 feet away. Made it just different enough to be different. Don't change a thing, or I'll have to come across the lake and slap you.
