Please!! No mega pipes! I get enough of that around here in my neck of the woods. :( Those little sewing machines sound like **** at high rpm.:eek:

  2. I have a theory about this - the tuner punks and rat rodders have never heard the real deal so they think a 2 litre 4 banger with a 4 inch exhaust tip or zoomies on a low comp smog motor is bad***, when it is just bad.

My nephews thought that neo-punk music was good (Green Day etc.) until I got them to listen to old school punk (Black Flag, Ramones, the Pistols) and got them into Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Boston, Mountain, Old Aerosmith (you know people who could write songs and play their instruments with skill and authority) and now the don't care so much about Green Day.

My point? take a kid to the Drag Strip or a Dirt Track and let them experience thundering V8s in all their glory! Let them hear the cackle of a Big Cam, High Compression Big Block idling and the Roar of a wide open throttle launch, they will never be the same.

Man, sometimes you guys wear me ****ing out. He's asking a question. I don't see anything about Honda's/ratrods etc. Answer a simple question, or choose to ignore it. Jumping on the bandwagon to flame him? Why? Share what you know, or keep your piehole shut......

  9. Wow, well said, I get your point. Okay, to answer the original question, 36 to 40 inches long with the four tubes from each side going into a collector.

it doesnt burn the valves it warps them as they cool to fast

  12. Thanks for ****ing it up for the rest of us. You never know, the "Old man who belongs in a retirement home", who you pissed off, just may be an old hot rodder with some cool stuff tucked away in his garage, wanting to p*** it on to a youngster with some respect for the hobby. I'm not real old, and I have some loud vehicles, but I respect my neighbors and try not to piss them off. Hell, I get pissed off myself when someone makes a **** load of noise in my neighborhood at an inappropriate time.

Yep, one of the reasons why I hate straight pipes on a lot of stuff, people are disrespectful. Don't come through my neighborhood at the wrong time with you loud ****.

  14. I bought a Harley some time back, pipes about 12" long. We ****ed with it untill 3 AM before we could get it started, I just HAD to hear it run. I promptly called my neighbors in the morning to apologize before they called me angry, and put mufflers on it before running it again. It's still too loud to run late at night.

That's one of the reasons why I quit driving my big windsor powered fox car because it was loud as hell.... even while idling!! :(

If you look back over the thread, you may notice that no **** was flung in the direction of the original poster until the following, quoted from two different posts:
    1) ... maybe ill use these to swap out to piss the conservative guys off...
    2) ... its not about attention its about doing whatever I WANT TO DO i dont do a damn thing to please anyone if cars are to loud for you move to a retirement home you might get some quiet there....

Speaking only for myself, up until that point my "piehole" was firmly shut. But here we have an a prime example of the "ME" generation. Screw everyone else, it's all about him!

His insinuation that anyone who doesn't share his infatuation with noise is ready for a retirement home shows a marked lack of respect for everyone besides himself.

Some have responded on this thread with some pretty good attempts to explain the difference between sound and just plain ol' noise. But hey, some guys just never get it!

Add another myth vote. Although, back in the sixties, we ran a Porsche 2 liter Carrera in a Speedster and the German mechanic who I hired in my shop, ran over every time I shut the engine off and he stuffed tennis balls in the short pipes. He was a believer in the myth. But, he also swore he saw Elvis at the local Dairy Queen. I gave him a break, he was just a kid,

I love these threads sooo much.
I was just wondering if the engine was hot, and that's why he couldn't afford headers? I like Lakes with caps and dumps, they sound pretty dandy by golly.

why do people have to knock 4 bangers out of the 12 cars i have the most fun is my 96 civic hatch theres something about 10000 rpm and 30 pounds of boost that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up or it might be the 830hp at the wheels

Lets see if I got this correct.
You can run no exhaust pipes on an motor as long as it is not a tuner or rat rod and it will not hurt the valves?

    from nowhere...

We used to run a set of zoomies on my coupe at the track, only.
It actually 60 footed the same, and had a better mph, and similar e.t.'s than with the baffled collector headers.
??? Well...it wasn't by much, but it DID perform better.

They were 18" stainless pipe, from an old F.E.D...
The car sounded NUTS through them...compression, and, MORE importantly, a lopey cam.

    A stock 305 w/ a 2 bbl, IMO, STILL sounds weak, irregardless of zoomies.:D
A stock cam, with zoomies is just a terrible racket...It doesn't even sound hard to me...it sounds like ***.

The baffles in my long, collector headers gave me a headache, after a couple hours, too, but, they cut a lot of the resonant noise out.
It "cleaned up" the note, and softened it.

Zoomies, IMO, are awesome...at the track.
But...if you are going to run 'em on the street, make some GOOD baffles, for yourself, and for Johnny Law...you'll be happier.
You WON'T burn any ehaust valves...well...not from the zoomies, at least...

And please...PLEASE build a motor with some cam and compression, to slap 'em on, if you don't have one already.

I am 22 years old. I personally do not like my vehicles to be too loud. But on the contrary, most people my age do. Many people that are of age now that cant stand loud vehicles were the doing the same thing when they were in their earlier years. What I do like to see is more people my age trying to experience hot rodding first hand, but more times than not, you will see someone negatively criticising their decisions. This is, in my opinion, one of the reasons we have seen so many people my age go to foreign vehicles. I just get tired of seeing so many grumpy *** comments instead of sticking to answering the question at hand. Try to suggest an alternative in an educational way.

I liked the straight pipes on my truck and am doing the same thing with my next. If you like the sound screw the rest, they just can't tolerate it i guess.

Dang, that's harsh. I bet you'd fart in an elevator just to get attention.
