So I just got done pricing out the stuff that I'll need to fix the cracked p***enger side window on my car and I'm coming up with about $250 in parts (give or take). Unfortunately, all the soft bits on my car are in bad shape or missing: gl*** runs front/rear and the anti-rattle strips. The strips only appear to be available as a package for both front doors (or both doors and quarter windows for even more $$$). I'm not against spending the money here if I have to, but my car is a 20 footer at best and this seems a little crazy to me. Are there any cheaper subs***utes out there?
For the fuzzy’s, I used black Velcro from ama@@n, They sell it in rolls, 7/8” wide with sticky back I used the fuzzy one and Tossed the roll with the loops on it I
Check your area for an automotive upholstery supply they may have what you need for a lot less than a aftermarket specialty vendor some of the things you need they sell in bulk and cut it to length plus you won't have to pay the crazy cost of "shipping and handling" which really adds to the price.
Look for "moleskin" channel liner. Try Restoration Parts & Supply (?) in PA. I got a roll of it from Northwest Cl***ic Falcon over a decade ago for my '55 Victoria and '63 T-bird.
Good idea, but I don’t have much left to reline unfortunately... I’ll check into that. The shipping didn’t seem too bad, surprisingly. It was more the cost of the liners and such that was out of hand.
I tallied up what I have in the doors on my '59 Ford and in total it came to about $900. Which includes an Edsel donor door, eBay door guts for the other side, Auto City Cl***ic door and vent gl***, new vent window gaskets, door gaskets, door handles (inside & out), $135 labor to have all the gl*** set. New fuzzies, new channel, rigid & flexible. This is one of the things you need to do once and get it right.
You make a pretty good point, this might be something I just have to bite the bullet on. I think there would be some money to be saved if my stuff could just be relined with velcro or moleskin or whatever, but the fact is, it's all missing except for one piece, and that piece is pretty well destroyed from the window flopping around in there.
Eventually you will likely break a window when you close the door. Old door gl*** is especially fragile over new gl***.
I wanted to post an update on this. I ended up getting my stuff from Tee Bird Products. I did this for a couple reasons, not the least of which is because they were within driving distance for me so I was able to just go out there an pick up the stuff -- which they had in stock. I would highly recommend these guys. The stuff I got was very nice quality. The gl*** run for the back of the doors was pre-bent and everything I bought came with the clips, staples, etc. to be able to properly install it. I just finished off the first door last night, which I wanted to do before posting any feedback. I'm in no way being compensated for saying this, just trying to give a good vendor their due. No, the parts were not cheap but I am happy with the quality of them. It was also really nice to work with a vendor that knows these cars. For future reference, they also sell some used parts and the gentleman I worked with ***ured me that if I needed something that they didn't have they could point me to a source that would.
I bought my channels from TeeBird and they had all the crimps and tabs already installed. The bend quality was so so. They actually sent me a second set which was better then the first set but still not what I expected for the money. They were having problems with their jig but this was a bunch of years ago so hopefully they got things sorted out. They did have great customer service.
