I work mostly by myself and as a reesult damage a lot of stuff just trying to manhandle things into place. I've been needing to fix the door tops on my F-1 project for quite some time. As heavy as the doors are and having to start the bolts into floating nut plates in the jamb I just put it off. I've seen commercial fixtures for body shops, but I couldn't see spending the bucks. Today I decided to put something together to get the job done. I used whart I had laying around. Hopefully the pictures will be self explanatory. One thing I did different from the commercial units was to make the outside upright folding. That made it easier to load the door and remove the fixture afterwards. I'll put foam on it later to protect the finished parts. Right now it falls under the"Crude but Effective" column.
Great home brewed tool there. I've hung a few doors but used only a floor jack with a 2X4 across the saddle.
Used the jack method many times. I've also used a "cherry picker" engine hoist. Actually makes it easier to "wiggle" it a little bit to get bolts started. DD
Like DD says,,,cherry picker and a sling. Also use a cherry picker to hold a door for painting,, made a bracket to go in the upper channel hung on a swivel hook,,,,
Understand the cherry picker method, however, I have 5 project vehicles in a 30 x 40, so floor jack is easier for me. I can't stand to leave one outside Ha Ha.
I too don't have any extra space. Actually I don't even have any kind of hoist... I'll definately tinker something similar as the need'll come. Thanks!
