Both my dads 55 and my 56 have the same problem. The door shuts and latches but then you have 3/8" play or so allowing the door to open and not quite seal properly. What part is allowing this to happen??

Sounds like the latch on the jamb needs adjusted or replaced. They are notorious for wearing out and not latching properly. The star gear on the door could be worn also.

Always look at the striker plates first. They give all sorts of dramas when they are worn. They're only about $30 each to replace from any of the repro retailers.
    Happy New Year.

Could be as simple as adjustment, I kept moving mine in and it got worse. I started adjusting it out and it corrected my problem.

Agree with Paleot. Loosen the three screws, slide the striker in about 1/4", tighten screws and see how the door latches. When the door is closed and it seems up or down across the top of the door where it meets the rear quarter, you can adjust the striker up or down to adjust that too.
