According to wikipedia the Connie first flew in Jan. 43 and as the C69
used as a high-speed long-distance troop transport before the war
ended. The Navy and Air Force used them till 1978 as the C 121.

Although most of my hours were in fighters, I put about 100 hrs in the right seat of a C-47. One day I noticed that the mfrs plaque on the bulkhead stated that ol' 777 was built in 1939, the year I was born. A sweet flying airplane. There is no sound sweeter than those old Pratt and Whitney radials firing up. The tales that old bird could tell! As far as I know, she still rests proudly in the Davis Monthan "boneyard".

Yes ,,that wonderfull sound of those Pratt-Whitneys firing up ,,in '63 ,,my last few months at Walker AFB ,Roswell,N Mex,,before going to Alaska ,,I was ***igned to Transient Alert ,,( you know ,,those yellow trucks with the "Follow Me" signs ) ,,i was on the Mid Nite Shift ,,the easy duty ,,picking up B-52 Drag Chutes ,,but every other nite or so ,'bout 3 or 4 in the morning ,,a C-46 Would Land ,,and interupt our Pinuckle Card Game ,,,i'd go out and guide him in ,,with my window rolled down to hear the Engines Idling along ,,then ,,after parking him ,,and he got all the B-52 & KC-135 parts unloaded ,,i got to stand ready with the fire bottle ,and listen to those wonderfull engines fire up ,,,
And I'm A JET MECHANIC ,,,!!! but ,,I was in the Pecos Valley Glider Club there ,,solo'd in '63 ,,and our tow plane was a PT-23 with a old Radial Engine that I werked on ,,,,Loved Em All ,,,

Boeing C-97 development began in '42. Prototype first flight in '44. Production models began entering service in '47. Sorry, no "service" in WWII. This was an offshoot of the B-29. DD

Antonov AN-2...first flight August 31, 1947. 18,000+ built, just a little shy of 200,000, and a tad TOO late for WWII. DD

You're probably thinking of the A-1 Skyraider. Used in Korea and Vietnam, but didn't get into WWll. As many B-25s as there were, I'm surprised they didn't get to Vietnam. And yes, thanks mods.

Once again...prototype XC-97 first flight on November 15, 1944. First deliveries of C-97A in 1947. Can YOU explain how they got TRUCKS up into a C-97? First action they saw was Berlin Airlift.

As far as my name...COOPMAN...I think that came from when Mom & Dad made me go sleep out in the coop with the chickens when I was bad, but back then they called me COOPBOY. DD
