Last summer I was able to get in and photograph what was left of the Dover Drag strip in Wingdale, NY; found out yesterday that they tore up what was left of the asphalt. I'll post the photos if I can figure out how to do it. Although closed in 1977, the remains of the strip are history. A lot of hot rodders had a lot of fun there. RIP DOVER!!! if it don't go, chrome it GASPUMPCHAS
Don't wet your pants ...it was gona happen...Watch for doverdragstrip.com....found all my old photos ...will be on line this week....happy now
I ran a post about Dover last year or so & got allot of respounce out of everyone. Its worth searching for. jimV
Some guy's site of Dover was in the links section of the "Sunday Niagra" site, I sent him a bunch of my pics (before movers lost them) but the site hasn't been updated or anything in at least three if not four years. You doin' something different, Dino?
About my site...its under construction, but will have about 300 BxW photos available for purchase. Cheap, to pay the site overhead & just to share these almost lost photos found in an attic and scheduled for the dumpster. Have located many sources of Dover Drag Strip "stuff" to share on the site. Have just talked to Dennis Tate (The one that made that video and will have his dvds available) as well as my own things like decals ,t-shirts and posters. Not trying to get rich here, just pay for site and keep the memories alive and available to all. Will continually be updating as more things become available. Storm: have cool shots of the"Storm King II" color shot of "hellzapoppin", Landy, Ivo, FTA ,Outlaws, Road Kings, candids and a bunch of surprises !
Looking for shots of Anton Addesso's blown '36 Dodge BB/A and any restored Dover regulars, especially "Blown He**** " and Bruce Hertel's Dragster.
Addesso's altered was one of the nicest looking cars I ever saw back then. As I recall it didn't run that well; but I may be mistaken. The car that I loved there was the Breeze Brothers Crosley. That car was clean, fast and was just the epitome of drag racing of the era to me. It was like a funnycar is today.
Hows this Storm King...one of 1200 shots we're franticaly editting for new site www.doverdragstrip.com
Just a sample of late sixties action at Dover. Got all the photos on CD now. Was gona post them all on the site but the amount of time it would take, not in the plans right now....will have a memory lane collage of a bunch and will ***emble some posters with catagorized cars, like Stockers,A/Fx ,altereds ,g***ers, dragsters , touring west coast fuelers & funnys, etc.
NITROFC, Thanks for the vedio! That rail on the near side is The Danbury Modifiers Lyndwood B/D and it is in my garage as I type this.
1936 Dodge BB/A ....Blown Hemi Run by Anton Addesso of Stamford.Ct area.& his brother Maurice I think .One piece lift off front end. Started out all metal Then made a mold for fibergl*** body. Check other Dover Drag strip thread, think somebody "found " the metal body out in field where he left it. He later ran a funny car I lettered and drifted into oblivion. Those headers made a sound like nothing else ! Have plenty more photos to dig out of this car.
We have latest web-site update... www.doverdragstrip.com Just got word we'll have a ton of newly found color photos on a "memory lane" page, a "store" for t-shirts ,decals and posters and even AUDIO of me announcing ! Any reunion news ???
Wanted: DoverDrag Strip Photos, Original memorabilia ,decals, original t-shirts .Thinking about putting a Swap'N Sell or Forum on site for all to stay in touch....need your input. All Dover Guys Check In ! Know of 2 people, one on ebay, one in Florida peddling Bootleg decals . Any Date on Danbury Reunion ???
Funny you should ask see ..."Wingdale" was known for the big New York State MENTAL hospital that was the biggest thing in the very small town. So if you said Wingdale ,it was just like saying "Bellvue" or a referance to nut cases. Dover Plains,N.Y. and even a little other town called Dover Furnace was near, so as a "Safer" P.R. move ,"Dover" was used. Just a little trivia there. To get to the track coming north on old Rt. 22 you went right by this big complex out in the middle of nowhere, and many a time , ther'de be a text book "nut case" sitting on a park bench strangely waving to the race cars flat towing by or with open trailers . You had to see it .
I remember flat towing there with my Nova. I was coming down some winding hill turn when the car jack knifed. bent the tow bar and dented my bumper. Not sure what road it was. Can't place the Mental Hospital but it was a long time ago
If you turned Left to into the Track entrance you'de never see the hospital. You came from Poughkeepsie side. If ya went straight ,over the tracks and turned right at the light on Rt 22 to go south ,the big giant complex was on the left.
I remember that guy actually directing traffic!!!he would be wearing gloves no matter how hot it was!!lol How about someone posting any pictures they got!!Anybody!! Beauller, Beauller?? Also does anyone remember fred Eglof(?) he ran a blue 62 chevy wagon with a 301 in it, i believe M/P cl***.He also owned "freds speed shop" on Tuckahoe road in yonkers & had a home fuel oil business in the same garage.
