Don't know if anyone has heard that Jamie Downs is back in business. The name of his new company is Downs Industries. The company has the same address as the old company (Downs Manufacturing-Legend Motors). Their website is http://www.downsindustries.com/Downs_Industries.html . It appears that they went bankrupt and came back in business under a different name . Warning to all rodders be careful when dealing with this company, these are the same people that took people's money and did not deliver the product.

Interesting. I don't know anymore than what I heard here but I wonder if he shed his former partners and started fresh... he'll have to work hard to make things right with those who got screwed.

I too would warn anyone contemplating a Downs product. I tried for several months to contact Jamie & Vicki Downs and got no reply.
The only way I would deal with him is if I could go and pay in full for a body on collection - definitely no money up front!!!

Now that you have a new phone (269-624-3860)number did you contact them?
    Will they make it good?
    What is their reply?
Seems like they would want to protect their name and work something out with previous customers that got pooped on.
I hate to hear about this stuff. Takes the fun out of messing with cars when someone is getting screwed. Esp. when I live in the same state.

I plan to give them a call early Tues morning our time (mid afternoon Monday Mi time).
While I generally agree with your view, I am not hopeful that they will do anything for someone in Australia - there would be little impact on their business.
However, there is nothing to lose by trying!

I finally managed to get through this morning. I explained my situation to the lady who answered the phone and she went and got Jamie Downs. Jamie told me his version of what had happened. In short there was a significant breakdown between Downs & Legend resulting in a protracted legal battle that, according to Jamie, left Downs out of pocket but with ownership of all their old molds. They had no records from the business as Legend had taken all the files and computers. He said he was prepared to make good on my order. I have just been credited with a refund through my credit card thanks to someone on this thread pointing me in that direction last year.
I will continue to monitor as he as also offered to make good on a deal that Legend had with a mate of mine in Kentucky.
Given the lies and run around I experienced in 12 months of dealing with Legend, I am more likely to believe Jamie than Legend.

I guess I am the type of guy who generally gives people the benefit of the doubt and at this stage, Downs are OK. Jamie did not have to talk to me and could have easily told me to go and chase Legend - but he didn't.

    Chris.

That's great ,I'm glad to hear Jamie is trying to make things right. I hope maybe I can get my grille. As far as the files and computers taken by Legend ,I was dealing only with his wife Vicky who told me to return the wrong grille and she would sent me the correct one. She confirmed that she received it but never received the right one.
Some excuse is better than no excuse.

    Good Luck,

I have read your experiences and understand your frustrations. I am a local buisness owner who runs a small design and manufacturing firm in Lawton, the same town that Downs Manufacturing- Industries is located. I have worked with Jamie for some time now supplying him with custom components as needed. I have had a front row seat to this show and I understand how it looks from the customer (trust me I lost some money also). Jamie decided to sell the buisness to Legand Motors who offered a substantial package, with the intent to be able to spend some more time with his young sons and wife and be finacially comfortable minus some stress. Legands is the name that needs to put the bad taste in your mouth, when Jamie signed the papers he was considered an employee and had limited control on any of the interior decisions made. Downs was a name to be proud of as I grew and I feel even more dedicated to his reputation today. I have had enough conversations with Jamie about his situation to understand the hurt he feels to have his name used by a secondary company and have them not deliver the products that his father and him were known for. Undertstand the respect I have for Jamie is not only based on his accomplishments in the past but has been refocused on his determination to recreate what was lost.

It's good to hear the perspective of a local business owner.

Having both succeeded and failed in business I know there are always two sides to a story.

Thanks for the input and I'd suggest you stick around here... you never know when you might pick up some business from your fellow HAMB'ers.

Mr. Dansie - I remember you very well. I USE to work at Legends and we spoke a couple of times by phone. My heart breaks over your loss along with so many others. I can actually say I am ASHAMED to admit I ever worked for these 'people'. Unfortunately you are not alone in being screwed over - as a worker I can not even get my W2 for income tax purposes from them. There is no means of contact and little a lowly, hourly paid employee can do legally. Its disgusting to think that in today's business world this can happen. The word scam quickly comes to mind.

I hope you and any others who've been left in this situation can find a valuable, reputable firm that will do right by you.
