According to the article, the SCTA dates back to 1938. (!)
I had no idea it was started back that early. I always thought it was one of the things like NHRA that came along post war. Tom S.

    Hey Bucksnort!

Thanks for the great shot of the Texas 34 Ford Altered a few pages back. If memory serves my right, the guys who owned this car were the Conant Brothers from Houston, TX. Could be wrong here so if I am would someone pipe in and tell who this was. Seen the car run a bunch. Had a injected small block with a four speed. Pulled the wheels in the first three gears. Won a bunch of Gas/Modified Production meets. Hope you will post some more pictures of Texas cars if you have them. Thanks again!

The trick used to be if you were too competitive in modified someplace and they didn't want you around, they'd break out calipers and tha' book and make a car go to comp elim.
Saw it tried once because of all things, tinted windows, if you can believe it or not. Almost got away with it, but the track owner in an effort to avoid mayhem, stepped in and said if they didn't shut up and race, every car would have to tear down and go to the ICC weigh station before anyone got any money that night.
It made for a real show on the track. Tom S.

In retrospect, this is a dangerous place to be, but I can't recall just how many times I would be just past the lights, up on a hood or something with a pair field glasses watching a run. I hated to having to sort out a car watching it's reaction on the noisy starting line.

Agreed, this is a fantastic shot. Tom S.

Old GMC's had their moment in prehistoric time, but the in-line classes really exploded because of the aid of folk like Kay Sissell, Ak Miller and etc.
Later, either with or even without the hybrid head, a few more modern in-line powered cars enjoyed a period dominating in modified as well as comp. V-6's never did enjoy the budget success of in-lines. Tom S. in Tn.

Thanx Old Drags. Do you have photo's you could add here of places around up there like Hardinsburg or others? Wish I could find some shots of tracks before they were paved. I know there were some in Ky like here in Tn., Ga., and Al. I understand the track in Bowling Green was such prior to Beech Bend. How about Clarksville Outlaw?
It's very difficult to find anyone who can talk about racing in the eastern US prior to the eastern migration of the Safety Safari, or strips prior to asphalt, let alone find a pictures that are not Nascar circle track based.
Exciting to learn some of these tracks are still alive, but some of the others I can not find anyone who ever knew they existed. I'm fearing that part of auto history is lost. Tom S.

addenum: That Fiat I've seen before and can't recall it, and another car that was based out of Greenback Tn. Maybe it will come to me........

Falcon; You wouldn't have any old drag racing photo's would you? Sand Mtn., old Ringold, etc... Central Ga. was about the epicenter hub of racing in DivII and the Southeastern US.
How far back does your collection go? Tom S.
