Someone else posted with a pic or 2 about Manassas stating this was indeed the oldest dragstrip in continual operation in the US. Hi-tech beams to operate clocks means there must have been serious involvement in running this dragstrip.
Like already stated," Great photos " ! Tom S.

For what it's worth, the Ardmore, Oklahoma track also claims to be the oldest, continuely run track.

OSHA would have to qualify this mans job as one of the most hazardous of all time, right behind ordinance disposal and just in front of test pilots, and not because of being hit or run over like you'd think, but rather being permanently maimed and disabled when someone who had serious $$$.00 on the race disagreed with what he saw.
Few people would walk the distance down track during trophy rounds, but there were always multiple finish line judges (witnesses) toward final rounds in money classes.
I've spent many hours on the big end.
Have I said GREAT SHOTS ? Tom S.

That is probably right. I think Old Dominion Speedway is the oldest continuously operating track East of the Mississippi. And it was owned and operated by the same family until just a few years ago...The Gore family. They are still involved and are the ones putting on the "60 Years of cars and Stars Reunion" this coming August.

Art Ward's Assassination, ran really strong, when he turned to funny cars (with Roger Guzman), he sold the sports car to Peggy Pierce, who painted it orange and turned it sideways into the guard rail at Denver International

  17. Im too young to remember that car (54) BUT there was a guy that hung around or ran an LSR deal & his name was Emil Grissotti...everyone called him "Griggs" & he was a neat old guy.He had a muffler shop,,,just thought of it,,Fullerton Muffler in So Cal.
The Gear Grinders car club had some of their meetings at the muffler shop in late 70s early 80s.
The name Emil on the truck jumped out at me.

what a great guy griggs was.

i'm rather certain that the truck is not his. i see there is a haysboro near nashville and one in calgary.

  19. The Road Runners met at Grigg's shop in the 60's. Griggs was the SCTA engine inspector for record certificstion. Being a machinist, Dad always needled Griggs about checking bore and stroke with a 6" machinist's scale! Griggs said "hell, I'm a muffler man, what do I know about michrometers!!" Yep, things were much looser in the 60's. ;)

Cordova Raceway Park also claims to be the oldes dragstrip in the country (or at least the town of Cordova claims it) but at 1956 it's not close. They also claim that their "World Series of Dragracing" is the oldest continous dragrace in the world. Spent a lot of Sundays there as a kid in the early '60s.

Bucksnort: Where did this pic come from?
This sure looks like a Tenn car from prehistoric days and I can not recall it. The 255 prefix even fits the area.
Any info at all ? Tom S.

addenum; had to come back and add, could this have been Curtis Goodwin's car, who operated Riverside Raceway ? This appears like it could have been the old original Riverside that was in the Sulphur Dell/Metro Center area in the 50's before it moved to Pegram alongside I-40 in the mid 60's.
I know I've seen this one....... Tom

Many years ago, there was a comp dragster owned by Curtis Goodwin who operated Riverside dragstrip west of Nashville. I last recall seeing it behind his T-Bird in west Nashville and I can't recall the year.
There was another single pipe rail dragster, just outside Nashville in Pegram that had an early Olds and front mounted GMC blower, named ' Daddy Rabbit '.

Somehow I do not think either of these is the car in Buck's photo, but I can't be certain about the first.
VW front end, airplane wing rib frame rails, Ford tub body........ somebody come to the rescue here........ Tom S.
