wheel standers rule..........

 

stunning thread period very enjoyable

 

I'm not sure of what I love the most about the video, the wheelstanders or the action music as the truck goes throught the board. Pure entertainment. Pure gold.

 

The Trash Truck wheelstander belonged to Connie Swingle, who, as you know, was Garlits right hand man for many years.

I interviewed T.C. Lemons (Garlits crew chief in the 60's - 70's) ) about fifteen years ago, and he told me a story about what had to be this incident.

He said that he and Garlits were hard at work on the dragster when they heard on the PA that Swingle was running in the Trash Truck. The next thing they heard was the standard thing every drag strip announcer says after a crash, "please, everyone, stay back'.

T.C. said Garlits never stopped working and never looked up, but said, "I'll bet he (Swingle) won't be at work on Monday!"

I totally believe that! Garlits has to have been the most dedicated drag racer on earth. I talked to TC a few years ago at the museum, he was a very nice guy, and more than willing to answer all my questions.

 

Great video.Neat to see Don Garlits and Jim Nicholl running rear engine cars.
This is 1971 when the big change over was just beginning after Big Daddy suceeded in getting
the rear engine placement to work right.
Lots of F/E rails were still around.Watch the video and see if the dinosaurs prevailed against the rear motors.
Great to hear and see those names again.

 

This one brings back some memories of my early days. Does anyone know the story behind this photo?
For extra points who can tell me where this photo was taken and when.
