The great Bobby Langley, note orange trees in background, how Pomona has changed! Bobby was an original, his crew was his wife and son...and one of the few "never lift" guys, remember watching him race Bob Haines (another "never lift" guy) at Bakersfield, both cars were more sideways than straight, but neither guy backed off...NHRA would have banned such stuff today!

Well, ok one more, because I copied the wrong picture, this is the right one; Grist Brothers A/G, Ford powered, rare chopped Willys, and either restored or in progress...another one saved

  15. When we were active in the very early 70's, (Norris Bros.,TF 440) we made a few trips to La Place, La. Candies& Hughes were always considered heavy hitters.
    Very well built cars.

Yep, this is indeed Don Kirby's Corvette Auto Parts vette circa 1966. Pat Foster did drive as well as Jungle Larry Faust. We raced him for the "worlds fastest vette in 66 at Stardust raceway and won. Don Rackman and John Garrison and Doug Kruse were also involved around this time. Kirby sure could paint and always put up with a 16 y/o punk (me). He once told us never to run more than about 20% nitro because the motor would explode. Well, it didn't but did many times with 98%. Ah, the good old days. BTW, Kirby painted the vette flames and all. C.J "Pappy" Hart used to hate to see the early vette in the staging lanes, saying " I can read both sides of the cars all the waqy down the track. Ronnie was another no lift kinda guy.

  18. Sam was indeed the Mayor of the City of Industry. He "financed" both of his Kurtis sports cars out of the city treasury. And that is the reason when Sam died, both cars were claimed by the city and sold. The car above was 427 Ford powered. The engine was built and tuned by local Ford guru Bonnis Herd.

  19. Dave McCellend's first Fiat. Absolutely the nicest steel Fiat body I ever saw. A very rare full metal top. The driver actually got in through the working door.

I see Shroyer's Shaker Thames behind the Smothers Bros./Beach Boys fueler.

Anyone have any clues to where it went?

THE Dave McClellan? The announcer Dave McClellan? I had no clue...remember the '37 Chevy gasser they ran before this Fiat (which got its engine, I think)...started out in primer, then competition orange...saw it run at Lions in primer, sun was setting, it jumped off the starting line like nothing I had ever seen, never forgot it...pretty cool to think that Dave McClellan got a start at Lions like so many others...
