I love looking at these pictures. You can almost feel the rumble, smell the tire smoke and hear the engines breath fire.

Were those early flip top Funny Cars steel bodied or we're they fiberglass?

The very early ones were steel, but after the Mercury Cyclones of Chrisman, Nicholson & Schartman came on the scene, fiberglass became the norm.

Not your normal drag car in motion, but it's in motion. This is John Geraghty's '40 Ford convertible, customized by the Ayala Brothers, drag racing somewhere, not sure the strip, maybe Santa Ana. John owned Geraghty Automotive in Burbank/Glendale, CA, and later went on to build the "Grasshopper" T-bodied altered roadster with the all-chrome Olds that was more famous as the Monogram model "Grasshopper" than it was on the drag strip. John was also responsible for the conversion of the famous Chrisman A coupe into the Barris-customized version that has now been restored to its original version. The Ayala Brothers hung out with drag racers like John, Big John Mazmanian, Doug Thorley, etc., so often their cust0ms would also perform on the strip. This custom was well finished and painted irredecent green. The photo, from the Wally Welch collection, came from Rik Hoving's "Beautiful Custom Car" site. If you happen to be new to the HAMB, be sure to visit Rik's site, he is the master historian of customs.

I saw this car run many times. Had an "off the shelf" Chassis Reaserch chassis with a super reliable Gene Adams Olds. Fantastic driver who knew how to operate the clutch and throttle very well. All the winning drivers in those days had the clutch and throttle mastered, not like today. Very exciting racing that kept the fans coming back for more at a very reasonable price.
