  4. Physics.

    To make these cars less prone to wheelstands, many added weight to their front axle. Many pictures show weight bars clamped and or taped to the axle.

    Another approach to reduce the tendency to wheelstand (without adding weight) is to lower the car's center of gravity. The only way to lower the engine is to drop the front of the engine, as the crankshaft must stay aligned with the pinion of the rear axle. Thus the nose down or "dump" angle.

    It sure looks cool.... but it also makes it really difficult to have 10 or 14 quarts in the pan when the crankshaft is only a few inches off the track...
