Gary, You had to wade thru however many cars were entered in your class and win your class BEFORE you moved on to eliminator brackets! You did not have to run apples against oranges, then bananas to win your class, each class had rules and weight-to-cubic inches and you raced heads-up til there was a winner. Correct?? I remember class winners got trophy, then you might be running for prize money if you waded thru the Eliminator bracket (Little, Middle, Comp, Top for example) that your class fed into. That's where handicapping became "fair". In the early 60s at Green Valley , pre-tree spotting was done in car-lengths, but only in eliminator run-offs or grudge matches.

Gary, Dark Horse 2 was not really center steer. The driver sat inboard but the seat was to the left of the drive line and built in to the tin work. I have the DRUSA with the feature on the car somewhere and will try to find and scan the story and photos.

I was wondering when someone would bring up Skip's Mustang. Nice shot with Ron Bizio in the background

  13. Yeah but how many were in your class? I went to Woodburn in the 60's-early 70's, there were nothing to "wade through" for the most part. How many A/A? One? Two?, B/A, same thing through D/A. THEN, A/G through H/G, THEN A/D through D/d, THen...etc, THEN the blown cars and THEN the fuel cars. So how many were in any given class? Not many at Nortwest strips. You had maybe 200-400 cars racing, 80% of which were stockers. Usually everyone just ran Eliminator brackets, who wants to watch a car single for the C/Gas trophy?

Is it possible that the gasser identity got lost somewhere along the way?? RIP, Johnny!!

If the track had class racing, I think it would have depended on the event. No matter how many there were in your class, you had to be the winner before you went on to the Eliminator brackets. Right? If you were the only one, I guess you went right in after a timed run. Don't think you could win a class without making a run.
But hasn't this always been about getting to make passes in your car, going quicker and quicker, and winning. From a spectator's perspective it always been about the cars.

This one might not be quite fair, but you get the comparison.

41willys%20(2).JPG Ron_Nunes_3.jpg Here's the one that really got me. The Corvette was a statement by a gasser legend on letting the class get "out of control".
I firmly believe it's always been about gasser identity. Of the cars in the above comparisons, pick out the Gassers.

Alright already not to add any fuel to this fire I would just like to say that things evolved from the nose high attitude and pie crust tires to the more aerodynamic body's and better tires. Henry Wilko's Ford sedan was a street driven blown buick car that ran C/GS they went to the Opel in the late 60's and a blown hemi.
