Hold your horses sunshine, I have plenty more images to post.
I just got back from three weeks in Australia and collected some more of my old photos while I was there. For now however we will go back to the 1970 Rothmans Nationals at Surfers Paradise.

I disagree with the editorial attached to this car in the above post. That is not a 1955 Lincoln V8. If it was it would have siamesed center exhaust ports. This car is powered by a MEL engine. Probably the Lincoln 430 variety. In fact I think is the same car that graced the cover a special "Hot Rod Magazine" nostalgia edition. Does anyone know the history of this car?

Re the Beebe & Mulligan car you got it right Ross, but all that went to the tip was the chassis all the other bits are still around spread out amongst a vast number of people. Napalm Willie has the rear Halibrand wheels and slicks, he sometimes runs them on his street rod. Rod Bradshaw did not know the history of the chassis and would not have thrown it away if he had known what he had. I bet that is the same story for a lot of old race cars.
I have a collection of photos of the US cars from '66 Australian Drag Fest and if I could use the scanner I have I would post them here. I will have to learn how to use these things!

That pic belongs in Super Stock magazine. Collison loved shots like that.

Nice shot of your car Don. Your car rules - and you aren't afraid to DRIVE it! Was that the best Thompson reunion or what?

P.S. I meant to ask you last weekend: My dad taught auto body repair at Mentor High School after he retired from the body shop trade. Did you ever run into Mr. Koesel?

  11. This may be the most popular thread on The H.A.M.B. But if we have 48,000 members, how did it get 308,000+ views?

    I come here 5 times a day sometimes... :D

I'm guessing lots of outside sites linking this post and bringing in unregistered users.

I bet this post is all over the net

  13. Greg? yes that was by far the best Thompson Gasser Reunion to date. My highlight was getting to race the Barnes 33 coupe. I remember when they brought that thing out of storage for the first time. Just an awsome car! As far as Mr. Koesel, I do not know him. Littleman took auto-body at Mentor, so he might have. I took college prep at South...

You're absolutely right. I'm a model car builder, and found out about this thread via a model car site. Granted, I did register, but it was this thread that brought me here, and I know I've told a lot of people about it.

I believe that this was piloted by James Warren of Warren, Coburn and Miller Ridge Route Terrors fame

The caption of this John Moore photo states the car is:
dragster is the team of Cagle, Callahan and Case

I have no idea who drove it

This piture speaks volumes about an era long gone, but certainly not forgotten but admired. The dragster is probably owned by 3 normal working stiffs, and was run with no spares and a 5 gallon drum of nitro sitting on an open trailer. Tuning was done by memory or a legal tablet with written notes. And the cars performance was significantly influenced by a driver who could modulate the power ever so delicately so as not to emulsify the tires, but not to bog it either. Delicate control of the throttle and clutch, and obscured vision brought to bare by having sit behind tire smoke and a 1000 HP hand grenade made for an adventures pass

How cool, your wife's uncle was Gene Altizer. A real standout racer in his day
