The one on the right blew out a high heel at midtrack. It was not a pretty sight.

Mark Stratton's Metronome... and yes, it is a Rolls Royce pushing the car to the start line...

Dennis thats great. I look forward to it. Any shots of the 68 Charger that was later sold and adorned with a Challenger body and dubbed, "Sour Grapes." I cant recall the owner. One of the more prolific contributors on this thread knew Vander Woude. I cant recall who, but he must have a ton of stories to offer. Vander Woude was a kind of do it all guy. He tuned and aided in the construction of his cars. Before being a touring racer he worked as a Navy See-Bea, and a deputy sheriff to name just a few.

Thanks for starting this thread Royalshifter. Here's a few from my collection. I was able to attend races at Fontana, Lions, Riverside, Tulsa, Bristol and Indy from '64-68 .

  13. Very cool video! Definetely IN MOTION!

  14. The "tires on fire" pic is Flamin' Frank Pedragon, formerly the worlds fastest mexican. His sons share that title now. His Fiat bodied comp coupe's wheel tubs fit real close over the slicks. The tubs filled with raw nitro, and a few feet off the line the, when the motor cleaned out, the zoomies would ignite the nitro. The first night at lions when Frank showed up with the new zoomies, and that happened, we all thought the motor blew, but he powered right on down the track. As they say, "the crowd went wild"! Once Pappy Hart reralized Frank was a crowd draw, he started paying him appearance money.

It was great to be 17 in '63!

  15. I think Fred Stone and Tim Woods were always black.

Here's an oddball for you. I believe it's the rear-engined sidewinder of Bob Dubarr (sp). I took these in 1963 at LIONS Drags Strip.
The guy in the last photo looking over the engine on the left is Bob Beaver, John Force's uncle!

Darryl Greenamayer ( jet test pilot and SR-71 pilot, hydro-plane racer) drove the Smirnoff car. Larry Dixon taught him.. The car was raced for but a year or so, and then stored for years, resurfacing only in the last year when Greenamayer finally decided to sell. Tom Hanna did the gorgeous tin and Dave Zeuschel the mill. It ran well too.

Thanks for the correction. I wasn't aware there were two different teams.

  22. That's interesting stuff on Woody.I never knew that.Makes my life look boring.I also wasn't aware that the Sour Grapes car was the 68 Charger originally. The guys name was Tom Johannsen(sp).I think the person here you are referring to is Andy Cooper, old friend from the funny car group you were a part of way back. I guess that's why John bought a sidewinder as his first funny?
Or maybe Christman just saw him coming!:D

How about posting them over on the Stock-S/S-F/X thread? The gang would love them. Any information on them?
    Thanks for posting.

Car sort of reminds me of my old former neighbor's racer, the Snodgrass, Mahnken and Andrews Ford powered Fiat, later to be adorned with a Mustang and dubbed the Pyscho

  28. Boy, you guys are young. The little guy painted on the side is the Burggie Man. He was part of the logo for Burgermeister beer. Bill Demerest who owned the coupe was in the Goundshakers club with Glen Way and other San Gabe guys who came in at 300 lbs+. Their drink of choice was Burgermeister in the 15oz. can. So when they got the coupe running, naturally it's number was "15oz".

Jesus you guys make me feel old.
