I heard an interesting story about the Champion Speed Shop/Masters & Richter car built by Kent Fuller. I posted pics earlier of my friend Ken Crawford's, "Kenz Muffler" C/FD that Fuller built. While talking to Ken the other day, he told me the about stopping at Kent's shop while in the vicinity, picking up a chute for his K88 dragster. Kent had a rope across the door opening to keep the onlookers at bay. Ken leaned over the rope and asked Kent how much for a chassis, Kent told him $1150.00 would get him a chassis, complete with an Olds rear end and Donovan clutch can. Ken showed interest, and Kent let him inside the rope. They struck a deal, and Kent started on the car. In a short time, Kent was nearing completion, and gave Ken a call, to ask how big of hurry he was in. Kent had a customer that wanted a car as soon as possible, and wondered if he could sell him Ken's and build a replacement for him. Since Ken wasn't quite ready, he said OK, and the car became the Champion Speed Shop car. Ken's second car was sold to someone else, and the third was a charm, Ken took it to Wayne Ewing for the body. The time frame worked out just fine, and Ken and Kent are great friends today. Here are pics of the the K88 (perhaps the cleanest one ever built), the victory at Bakersfield, and a rare shot of the the "Master" himself, Wayne Ewing, building the magnificent body on Kent's car. Note the Indy car chassis stacked up in the background.
