Actually Dixon did most of the driving in the car until it was parked. As you noted it sat for a long time but was totally complete except for the motor which went into a drag boat owned by one of Greenmayer's buddies. The bolts for the motor plate were still in the seat under the parachutes when the car was retrieved from its long time resting place.
This was not one of Hanna's bodies . It was designed by Steve Swaja (who I met at Bakersfield last year) and constructed by Bob Sorrell (if my memory is working correctly this morning).

It lead a life sort of like the Spruce Goose: Run breifly then stored away from the public
s eyes only to re-emrge for restoration. Swaja designed Tony Nancy's 22 Jr. Wedged FED to did he not?

  13. Only one team. The last Swindler was painted black for a short time. Apparently my attempt at humor failed. I was referring to the car owners!

Yup, Dad gave me a little Kodak 127 film camera when I was about 6 and then gave me his twin-lens Graflex 120 camera when I was 10. I still have it, works great...helped shape my career for the next 40 years.

I stole this from the Cacklefest/Smirnoff article...

"To add to Prieto's comments about the Smirnoff, Sorrell deal, Sorrell was an odd sort, very talented but odd. The car went to him for the body and it took too long, the delays caused by who knows, so Zuech, Daryl, Roy were justifiably upset during the ordeal but the work spoke for it's self. In the course of the body fabrication Bob (Sorrell) decided the roll bar was too high and at the wrong angle for how he felt the body should appear. Race cars are a strange breed when it comes to form and function. Car builders, as a rule think and cater to function and also as a rule the body masters will tend to put form ahead of function. Sorrell took that at least one step too far when without informing any of the principals of his decision, he cut off the entire cage, built the rear half of the body, never reattached the cage in anyway and told them to come get er' - it's it's a wrap. Roy went insane, blamed Zuech as much as Sorrell, Zuech shrugged and said we'll get a smaller driver. and Daryl (who was small) thought she looked bitchin and finished it the way she sat!" - Pat Foster

HA! No wonder rails these days have big square bodies and vinyl!

What a piece of art. To hell with function, lets make this an excercise in what can be done with thin metal

Bill Bussart's H/Gas '62 Corvette leaves hard at an NHRA Winston Championship Series points meet at Warner-Robins Dragway in Georgia. A 288ci small-block Chevy (in this case equipped with Kinsler-modified Crower fuel-injection system) wound to 9,000-plus rpm was typical of the heavy-car, little-motor formula used in the upper Gas and Modified Production racers.

WCD, I was just a kid when this car ran the 1/4 mile, but I found this on a web site when I was searching gasser classes because I know Daly's '55 had a small block w/an early kinsler fuel injection w/the maximum setback on the engine. I think the small block was in 283-301 range

Man, try pulling off this shot today, posed next to pair of potentially errant top fuelers, with your only means of safety being some rubber cones. NHRA safety rule book says, "Note, any competitor who plows into Mr Parks will face stiff penalties, not the least of which will be expulsion from the event."
