  8. IMO, this is where F/X, or funny car evolution should have stopped. This was bad ass racing with real automobiles. Today's plastic blobs have no interest for me. They should change the class name to "ridiculous cars". :(

That's too bad I was hoping to hang out with you. We just went to another Southeast Gasser race in Knoxville this past weekend and posted some pics in my thread. there is a link in the Signature of this post.
Also I will be posting pics after Bowling green there also and if it is like past years I will probably have around 4 or 500 pics:)

I agree completely. On my site, if the FX/Match Race Cars did not have opening doors, they are not on the site...

    I'm with you Dean
Some years back I ventured south for the Big Show at Pomona, this was before they shortened the 1/4 mile to 1000 feet for the pro cars.
I've done some amateur drag racing (70's) and always followed the pro stuff too but never more than seeing NHRA champs on cable at a friends house(haven't had cable in 30 years).
It definitely was a "show" I'll give them that, more of a spectacle than anything but I don't feel compelled to go again. It was one of those things you do just so you can say you did it.
The cars were bright and shiny, loud and fast, and loud. But WTF, this ain't drag racing.
I was more entertained by watching John Force whizzing around on his scooter.

More from Tom West...Groundshakers...named because these were really BIG guys, I think you had to be around 300lb to get in: Glenn Way (probably driving), Everett "Hippo" Brammer, Mike and Bill Demarest, etc...The chassis was by Woody Gilmore, torsion bar in front of axle...I remember that this car went pretty straight for an AA/FA so maybe the idea worked...

OCIR, this was a great place to race unless you had 'chute failure, at least one car would up on the freeway that ran behind the shutoff area....lost to developers like almost all the other tracks in SoCal...

Leland Kolb. After the tragic Mulligan accident, Leland bought the Beebe and Mulligan car, and fitted his late 426 hemi in it. Note that the names Beebe and Mulligan have been taped over. Dave West has created a perfect replica of this car as Beebe and Mulligan ran it....(thanks, Roo, for the earlier correction, not sure what part of my brain was unplugged!!)

Abbott Brothers...this car was a test bed for the Lenco shifters....at Irwindale

All I know about this modified roadster is that it was from Louisiana...ID? (I can't read the name on the cowl)

I've posted a lot of pictures of Bobby Langley's various cars...because he is one of those early drag racers who did it all; built his own cars, toured from coast to coast before the interstate system was done (so lots of 2-lane roads behind a logging truck, for example), and his crew was usually his wife and son when he traveled....he was one of many great Texas drag racers...

    Smyser and Woosley.jpg
Smyser and Woolsey. John Smyser was better known for his "Terrifying Toronado" but he also raced fuel dragsters...Glenn Woolsey was the other guy involved

ID welcome. That looks like C.J. Hart holding his ears, Lions, pre-'65.

Dave that pic with C.J. is perfect, those early 60's fuelers with wheels up and the weed sweepers just boiling the hides were magic to me a young kid building his gasser

That fellow behind C.J. might be Dave Z. as it kinda looks like him
