Jere Alhadeff photo of the L.A. Dart of Bill Shrewsberry.
This photo was taken on a public street with a Chrysler Corporation bigshot riding shotgun who was unaware that Bill was going to stand the Dart on its bumper! :D:D:D

  4. As Gary Nichols alluded to, I am into large scale model trains as a secondary hobby. Wild Bill is too. He used to show up at some of the train shows, and club meetings. When he learned I was an old drag racer, we shared a lot of stories, which, if you ever met Bill, you'd know he was a master at telling. He never shared this one, but knowing Bill, I bet he enjoyed the hell out of scaring the shit out of the Chrysler big shot. Great pic, and story. thanks for sharing.

Dean, I asked Jere about his photo just a few months ago at the March Meet. I thought it might have been taken at LIONS, but then Jere set me straight and told me the story. It was at some speed shop or some kind of grand opening or something similiar to that where the bigshots were also invited. Jere said that the Chrysler honcho, who was NOT a drag race guy, asked Shrewsberry, "So, what exactly was this LA Dart built to do?". Thats when Bill asked the guy if he wanted to go "for a ride"...

Hahaha, excellent story. What a caracter. How about a DR story thread?

  7. Bill might file that one under "thought you'd never ask"!! The towers in the background have the look of the ones along the San Gabriel river. Could be where the power lines come down into Long Beach. Would be interesting to know where exactly it was, but we may never know............................

Next time you see Bill ask him about the time he came down under and went to the beach before a race. From memory it was early January and he had come out of a northern winter. He got absolutely toasted and we turned up at the track later in the day and he was almost crying when he put his firesuit on. Very painful.

  11. When Wild Bill came to New Zealand I remember that after he made his pass he came down the return road and stood it up again on the return road just a few feet from all the spectators leaning on the fence. I have a 8mm movie of it somewhere.

  15. I don't know about other wheelstanders, but Bill had his set up with turning brakes , like a sand rail. One night at Irwindale he went down the track on the bumper, turned it around in the shut off area, got it back up and blasted back to the starting line. He got maybe 20 feet from the line, and hit the left brake while keeping it about half throttle. That thing spun on the bumper about 2 1/2 revolutions! The crowd went wild, but the officials didn't appreciate it much.

Well, lets see. Seems like a strong chassis, got a super powerful jet engine, a drivers seat... hmmm, once I get the steering hooked up, I guess were ready to go racing! I'll go ahead and spend a few more hours on this drag car.
Ya know, ya never can be too safe!!! By the way, ya wanna be my driver when we go racing this weekend?

    Welcome Sir.

  21. From a DVD I saw for sale:

A/Fuel Action For Tony Waters highlights the 2004 Goodguys VRA 2004 A/Fuel action at its best, including record runs and top-end photography of high speed dragsters trying to slow down - something dragsters don't like to do after a 200-mph pass.

We give special notice to Tony Waters and his team. Tony is a legend in the sport. He was Top Eliminator runner-up at the first March Meet at Famoso back in 1959, in his blown roadster. It's great to see the old timers still giving the youngsters a run for their money.

A top-end altercation takes place where two cars come together at the same turnoff. One of the cars is Tony's. Like most old timers of the sport, they pick up the pieces and put them back together again for another season. However most of the youngsters have this same spirit and will come back next season to give the old man hell.

    Is that you?

    Hello Hydrazine Boy-

Do you remember my dad, Denny Bloching, ran a number of cars outta Northern California (Walnut Creek, Fresno, Pleasanton). They were all under the "Proud American" name. Jr. Fuel and A/ Fuel Altered?

Davey, I might asked this before, but I forgot, but did your dad ever venture south for those events at Irwindale, Lions, etc. wherein the injected A/FA's had their own 8 car open circuit? I attended a few of those events 69-70. Also there a funny car dubbed Proud American by a guy named Ed Carter. Was your dad affiliated with that car as well?
