I am thinking maybe VW with the VW torsion bar front end to go with them. If the car had a regular straight tube/ dropped or beam axle it should be visible in this photo but there appears to be nothing directly in line with the hub centers. A VW torsion beam with the arms at full droop may sit high enough to look like this. My reasoning is that the lowest dark part between the wheels is definitely higher than the centerline of the right wheel.

  6. Ok is there any significance to the numbers on the side of the gassers? Displacement?

usually it's just the cars number. Like mine is 104. It's how they keep track of who is who. Baseball players have numbers. Football players have numbers. Everybody has numbers

No ID...note the rubber buildup on the body

I am pretty sure this is Bob Downey, driving the Howard Cam Special.

I wondered it if was...Bob Downey was a great guy, once ran a flathead powered fuel dragster, 100% nitro, we raced at San Gabriel with the Ardun in my avatar...flathead beat overhead....to my great embarrassment!

Here is another shot of the Howard car with Bob, famous header flame shot at OCIR:

Nye Frank's Pulsator 1 minus the full body. Most likely "Floyd" at the wheel.

  22. With the photo of my red RPU is my buddy Joe Lassalette. Joe built the Willys that was later owned by Dick Morogo, doing the wheelie at LIONS. As far as the paint on the restoration, it's still up in the air. At first Steve intended to paint the car the Corvette Roman Red as it was on the HRM cover. After working on the car, and driving it, he was leaning towards the candy persimmon. Nothing set in stone yet.

Note entirely sure on this one, but remember a Scott Hunter who ran a steel funny car like this, using an early Chevy (like maybe a '34?) frame -- it was never clear how it could pass inspection, and the name seemed appropriate...anyone else remember it?

Loved the Jr Fuel dragsters; simple, sweet and swift.
