I use a 3/4 belt to drive the oil and fuel pumps. Never had any trouble. Mine runs 3 miles at a time, but at around 5000 rpm. If I was just driving the fuel pump I would be using a 1/2 inch belt.

The original "Bad News Coupe," run by Bruce McDowell, here at Pomona. This one crashed, and the engine went into a dragster driven by Bob Sidebotham....Bruce McDowell had the original Hawkins & Webster "15oz coupe" before Les bought it from him -- later Hawkins & Webster built another "Bad News Coupe," and another followed...unfortunately led to a fatal accident at OCIR.........but this one was the first. From the George Klass collection, as is the next one.

M&R -- the original Fuller "Cigar car" before Bob Haines rolled it...was replaced by the chassis from the Champion Speed Shop blown Chevy car...this is a pretty old photo, notice the modified roadster in the background.

  6. Back in '63 when we first started running Hilborns, no timing belt drives were available. Hilborn sold an SBC mount for a V belt off the water pump. Good to around 6000rpm. Trouble was, we were in the lights at 7200 to 7400. Stupid V belts cost me some races. In the end we were running over 7800 in the lights, and no trouble with the mag drive pump.

  7. I watched Bruce build this one in his mom's La Puente garage. Started with a 6 carb Chrysler and a stock WB Model A frame. Bob Sidebothom shortened it to 86", and hooked Bruce up with Demar Ray. Bob drove, and the car ran mid nines at over 160. Demar's engine later went into a Sidebothom chassis owned by Bill Borchers, a high school friend of mine. The car's big shot was qualifying for T/F at the '64 March meet.

In 64' when I was buying engine parts for my new gasser I bought the Hilborn front cover with the cam driven pump mount, and did not have to use the mag pump drive

Also it was only 2" away from the gas tank for short fuel lines

I remember the Borchers car that Sidebotham drove, it was called the "Bad News Ghost" because this engine from the crashed coupe went in it...notice in the picture that the injector scoop is the same as it was on McDowell' Fiat...it ran strong at Bakersfield, as Dean noted, until eliminations, when the oil filter fell off on the run...picture from Don Ewald's site, caption says "1960," but I think this is actually later, maybe '62 or '63?

  25. Bill Borchers was, lets say, "different". He was an excellent student that pretty much kept to himself in school. He had a few good friends that nicknamed him "Broach". After Bakersfield, Demar pulled his engine, and Bill parked the car in his mom's garage, and went off to travel the world. The car sat in his mom's garage and was slowly stripped of everything but the chassis and front end. When Bill's mom died, he needed a place to store the remains. Another of my high school buddies had bought a home next to my first house. Bill brought the frame and front end over and put it in Larry's side yard. It must have sat there for 5 years, or more. Larry tried, in vein, to get a hold of bill to come and get it. He never responded, and we figured he was dead, or on a real "bad trip". In another year, Larry discovered sand buggies. He tried once more to contact Bill, with no luck. So, you can guess what happened.:( The Sidebothom chassis became an SBC powered sand buggy. A couple years later, Bill showed up, out of the blue, and wanted his "race car". He was not happy. We have never seen Bill Borchers again.
