At the time it was built, was considered the new wave of NHRA towers

  3. I live down the street from where DIMS once was, my parents took part in the International Pop Festival there. I remember the tower was still up well into the late 80's.

Not to detract from the subject of track towers, but I like the use of a shot depicting the late great top gas class. The announcer at the tracks would often refer to the class as "Those guys who run the 39 cent a gallon stuff!" THIRTY NINE CENTS?

DIMS was hated by Lewisville after the "Pop Festival" and land was going out of sight for developers, think Trammel Crow owned, not sure, but as Dallas County grew, land went way up,and we got another damn mall.Thank you Allstate Development.Anyway was a good track while it lasted,I still have my pit pass, program, and large flyer advertising the 69 Spring Nats. Hell as time trials were going on they were still paving the staging lanes and pits.

  10. This shot is on the cover of an early issue(1962) of Eastern Drag News. I believe it was taken at 75-80 Dragaway. Anyone have any EDN they want to sell? PM me..

Good to know.....I figured it was either 75-80 or Mason Dixon.

  14. The PVTA "tower" in late 62. State of the art!! Sunday afternoons at Pomona, what a great time. 10 bucks to enter, make all the runs you wanted, hot dog and a coke for a buck and a quarter. Now, THOSE were the good old days. This was the B/SR trophy run. The 10.00 16's on the rear were on loan from Gray Baskerville's M&V Automotive altered roadster. We wanted to see if more tire would be quicker. It wasn't. All we managed to do was burn the paint on the fenders.:(

  24. That's either a very, very young Sam, or it's his son, Buddy.

Dean, that photo is dated 1956, when the City of Industry was incorporated.

  26. That is one of only two 500-S2 Kurtis Kraft sports cars ever built. This was the last automobile Frank Kurtis designed.

The other car belonged to our good friend Jack Lufkin of Whittier. Jack assembled it with an eye tword LSR racing, particularly SCTA's modified sports classes. This pic is the unblown C class run. Before Jack was through, he held all 5 cu. in. class records, A thru E. The E record was 206, and the last year he ran the car it went over 308 in A class with a twin turbo 454 BBC. This was the first gasoline fueled car over 300 on the salt. A few years later SCTA "retired" the class records. Their spin on the speeds are out of reach, we're changing the class to give others a shot. Unfortunately, Franks body design was over it's head at 300 mph. On a final atempt in the A class the driver, Jerry Spotts, had it go airborne, and slid it through the traps on his head at something over 280. Other than having his eyes full of salt, Jerry was OK, and the car was not beat up that bad. But it scared the shit out of Jack, and he cut it up for scrap. A knee jerk reaction I'm sure he might regret today. So, the Parriot car is the only one in the world. It is on display in the NHRA museum, but the current owner painted it black. The engine is a kick ass 427 side oiler built by a Les Ritchey desciple, Bonnis Herd. Sam was in his 70's when he ran it, and it was a handful! Ran 150-160 and owned the AM/SP class in So Cal in the late 60's.

  27. Well, Sam sure lost his hair fast! In 61 his forehead went almost back to his neck.
