Far lane in the Henry J: Wayne Arteaga, running B/Altered with a Potvin-blown Olds...Wayne would later run AA/GS...forgot who ran the Walz Oldsmobile deuce....might this be at MoKan? (thanks to Roo for noting that this is not MoKan, and to Christmas Tree for track and car identification: "That is Terre Haute Indiana around 1959 Garland Tyler in the 32 and Wayne Artega in the J Both these guys were tough and slapped the Chevy guys around pretty hard. Those are the days I still dream about."

Captions always help...Aquasco Dragstrip in Southern MD, thanks, Bowtie Coupe!

A long time ago...No info on either the cars or the drag strip...anyone?

Jr Thompson's blown Chevy-powered '41 Stude gasser at Santa Ana, '59. Notice the 34 he is racing, this was back when many gassers were actually street-driven.

Spectators watching an early Afrons Green Monster...not sure where this is. This Green Monster languished outside at the Talladega Museum for years, where I saw it...hope it is back inside now....(it had a nose made from two '40 Ford hoods).

No information except September '56...and Desoto powered

Same track as above, some have suggested it is in Texas...November '55, the year when dragsters like this were replaced by early slingshots, which became the dominant dragster style until '71.

Lloyd Scott's "Bustle Bomb," no date on picture. Lloyd was from SoCal, but towed this car around a lot for '55, including to the NHRA Nationals at Great Bend, KS. Olds up front, Cad in back, swing axles, very well designed and built. The car would later wind up in Washington State, and Orv Moe, the manager/owner (?) of Seattle Raceway, had it. Don Garlits, wanting to add it to his Museum of Drag Racing, ultimately got it, though there was a bit of a squabble over how he did get it....I am recalling the story from memory, but think that Moe's wife/widow (??) wanted to retain it....anyone remember better than I do??

Now that's the "odd couple", in a good way.
I have never seen that one before, would like to hear this combos' backstory.

Ratican, Jackson, and Stearns, from California, getting the trophy for A/A at the NHRA Nationals ('61 or '62?) Blown Olds, car has been well restored after it was retired, Woody Duke of Duke Aviation bought it from RJS.

Bud Faubel (sp??) --- stockers were initially just stockers, family cars that got little attention from spectators, but as they developed, and became much less stock, the fans got more excited by them, cheering for their favorite make to win. In drag racing's early days, stock modifications were very limited, no racing tires, no engine or chassis or body mods, exceptions were 1/4 engine overbore (so you could run a rebuilt engine in your old stocker), and remove the air cleaner...that was all. One impetus for change was that the speed equipment manufactures saw a huge market in stock car speed equipment, so the rules gradually changed. Now, like NASCAR, almost nothing is "stock" except the name. But unlike the '50s, the fans love them...

Ok, Texas guys, help me out...assuming that the channeled deuce near side is Don Breithaupt, before the red paint and the blower with long injector tubes. It looks like it is in street configuration here. Also assume that this is Caddo Mills, as you can see the second runway in the background...Caddo Mills was a WWII airfield that was shaped like a triangle, with the drag strip on the widest runway...no stands, no concessions, maybe even no porta-potties?...just old fashioned Texas drag racing!

Dyno in his 409 racing Dave Strickler in his Grumpy Jenkins-tuned 409, '62 Winternationals. Looks like home-town favorite Nicholson is ahead here, but don't know who won. I was there, I should remember, as I was also from Pasadena and got beat by Nicholson street racing in this car (badly!) Notice the spectators hanging on the pole outside, anything to not have to buy a ticket! The old orange warehouse in the background is long gone...

No ID, looks like an Olds engine...back when gassers were often street-driven

MoPar all the way (looks like the photo was printed backwards)...this is how we applied racing numbers, with white shoe polish.

An unpainted Fuller "Magic-Car," that might be Fuller himself next to the car. Fuller was a genius, a term we use all too frequently, but it fits Fuller. For us mere mortals, a dragster chassis was what you hung all your stuff on, but Fuller could see a chassis relative to all the forces working on it. For example, the torsion bar front was partly to take the pivot point from the engine's torque off the front spring perch on traditional cars and move it out to the ends of the torsion bar mounting tube, so to lessen the twisting of the engine on the rear tires, etc. The "magic-car" was supposed to compensate for the pinion gear trying to climb the ring gear, or something like that, things that we mortals never understood. I think Fuller built three Magic-Cars, one for Ronnie Winkle and Kaye Trapp, one for Jim Albright and company in Washington State, and I have completely forgotten what happened to the third. Corrections welcome, as always! (and thanks to ttwomotor for remembering the third "magic-car," it was the Greek...he has posted a picture in a later post...thanks!)

  16. The photo of DCB before the red paint looks as tho he is running The "Mud Hen" of Buddy Anderson
this was before he built the "white wabbit" Fiat.
Maybe Briethaup will chime in here and tell us for sure...He does read the HAMB...

Drag boat racing had a clock at the line that drivers could view (and anticipate) from the rope (where they hold the boat prior to firing).

I think you're right, here are a couple of pictures of the "Mud Hen," and the Fiat that followed:

  22. Vernon Rowley looks to be at Aquasco Dragstrip in Southern MD.
In the bottom picture, it appears to be a Studebaker and not a Chevy.

Don used to hangout out at Bob's Big Boy in Pasadena and partipate in impromtu street races late at night. Then return to Bob's for fries and a strawberry malt. Fun times. Dick M.

I know, I was there...driving my '30 Ford roadster with a 324" Olds, headed towards Bobs, when this guy in an plain white '62 Chevy pulls up next to me..."does that thing race sedans?" he asked. My buddy said "sure," and by the time I had crossed the street I could already see his taillights. So we pulled into the Powerine Station next to Bobs, and the guy who beat me ("you didn't know that was Don Nicholson???" my friends asked) then chose off a blue '58 Chevy 348 owned by a guy named Skip Smith. So we all went down to Huntington Blvd. and my buddy flagged them off...Smith won by a nose, turned out that Nicholson had dyno-ed his car. I never forgot what he said "I never heard a guy shift so well trying to catch me." Then back to Bobs, and a Big Boy and Onion rings. ..(the next time I saw the '62 was at the Winternationals where Nicholson cleaned the class, so I didn't feel so bad, but wish he had painted his name on the car as he did for the nationals so I might have been more careful that night on Colorado Blvd. My friends never tired of razzing me for it.)
dmorago, sounds like you were there too, around those times.
