FINALLY got some photos from our Swedish national event last weekend. Not still in motion but gettin' ready. I can't say anything about the cars as I didn't have the time to speak with the owners. Enjoy

This last shot speaks volumes about what a FED pilot is faced with when a motor grendades. It almost looks ALIEN like. Imagen facing such an inferno in the old silver fire suits of long ago

those last 2 shots are the same car just differnt times in the sequence of shots. yes it would be a bitch but id deal with it. its gonna happen to you eventually just better not to think of it all the time. speaking about those old silver suits half of the guy wore 1 layer cotton suits !! a 7 layer fuel suit with nomex's and hoodsock. very well could of have saved john mulligans life in indy 69.

I read that years later when DG was putting his museum together he found this car and identified it by the dent in the roll cage where it had come forward and hit the injector scoop. This moment could be considered the nail in the coffin of the FED. I wonder how much longer the FED would have lasted had Garlits not been in the hospital for weeks with nothing to do but design his first rear-engined TF car?

although garlits perfected the red he was definatley not the 1st to have one. there were others some good perfroming some evil.:D theres a short story i remember reading about that car, the 1st race out a funny car had wrecked and the motor had come tumbling down and almost took the car out they had a FED brand new ready to go he said if the red would of been creamed he'd of given up on it.

Yes, there were many RED's before Garlit's, some back in the 50's, but the Garlits accident was the real end of FED.
I've got a copy of the only known movie footage of this accident and its stunning how violent it was.

If someone doesn't post it, Don Gillespie's "Lion's Dragstrip Part III" will feature the crash (not sure when he's going to release it however). Part II came out earlier this year.

No, I can't. The rights to it belong to Don Gillespie. He sent me a copy a few years ago to look at. Some of my original drag film footage is in Don's first two films, LIONS, the Greatest Drag Strip, Part 1 and 2.
As also mentioned on this thread, it will be out this Fall. It will probably debut at the CHRR in October.

Lee I'm pretty sure the guy circled was hit by a piece of clutch shrapnel and was seriously injured. Not certain but I think he lost an arm. You can see a piece of smoking metal headed his way in that shot.

At the time of Mulligans passing the advent of the nomex suit had been in existence for about 3 years. In Mulligans circumstance, the suit, like so many of the era, were not as thick as the one's today. Plus Mulligan was without fire bottles. Finally, the restraint harnesses in Mulligans car melted from the fire. As the car rolled, Mulligan was thrown from the cockpit. So besides the burns, he was suffering from massive internal injuries. However, despite the medical mallady he was making progress. But as he was healing, the doctors made a gross error in allowing vistors not donning sterile gowns and masks. In essence, those drivers who paid a visit caused an infection to set in, and the antibiotics of the era proved ineffective. An irony was that AJ Foyt was willing to fly Mulligan on his own plane to another hospital known for its superior treatment of burns. The Mulligan family declined

Looks a lot like him to me. And I think he WAS their driver back then.

  30. THATS MY CAR! I wanted that thing badly when Dean owned it. I did a thread here about 5 years ago asking for info. Ended up calling a guy that worked on it, he was a mech at Central Chevy I believe, I will see if I can find any of my research.
