History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

  1. Bob Longpre ran a new 60 Pontiac, supposedly off his dad's showroom floor, every Sunday at Pomona in 1960. This Poncho was bad fast. Kicked ass in SS every weekend. The other guys in the class, my dad included, got tired of this, and finally went together and protested, demanding a tear down, even though the engine passed the P&G test. Guess what they found? All crank throws were stroked 3/8", except the 1-2 throw! Inspectors always checked the #1, or #2 hole, so the engine checked OK week after week. Bob was told he was no longer welcome at Pomona.
Side to side, no, front to back, yes.

Now THAT would be possible. All cylinders on one side would be a pretty good trick with shared journals.

That's like Howard Johanson's Crosley. I heard he bored the rear cylinders oversize because they were hard to get to with the engine setback. So the inspectors always measured the front cylinders.

  4. There are an amazing number of tricks done to Stock and Super Stock engines. Some legal by the rules, others not.

  6. I actually remember this race-Woodburn-Ed McCulloch's first ride in a funny car.
Art Whipple Camaro, the ex Richard Shroeder- Ron Tonkin car, Ed won the race. Here he's out on Bob Bedell. Car ran low 8's that day. The Grassi -Austin Fuel Cuda was also at this race.

It was great, silence as the cars pushed down the strip or return road, the anticipation!!! THEN, WHAM those big nitro motors came to life! To the line, pushed into the staging area, WHACKING THE THROTTLES ,slowly staging then......the tree counts down. The EXPLOSION, tires smoking ,engine screaming down the track! It was FANTASTIC!!

Racing really lost something when they went to smokeless runs. MUCH faster, but just not as cool.

Gary, any idea whose olds powered car this is? I was at San Fernando around then and never saw it...it looks crude but it is also pretty advanced for the time -- maybe '58?

  20. No I don't! the caption is "
This photo was taken in 1957 at San Fernando Valley Drag Strip and perfectly illustrates the creative side of dragster building. With a longer wheelbase than most cars of the era, and a blown Olds sporting a primitive two-port fuel injection setup, this car was probably a hot topic in the pits. I don't know why exactly but I just love the Austin and Grassi Fuel Cuda. Some have labeled it an "odd duck", maybe that's why I like it.
I never had the opportunity to watch it run.
I guess I better fire up the old time machine.

  22. I believe the Fuel Altered Jeep is driving was Cedarquist Brothers & Ryan. The engine was out of the Cedarquist Bros. '29 altered, also #52.
