HOTROD47, i never understand why people say they can't race anymore! i race a '32 bantam in a nostalgia series every other month and it never cost me more than 150 bucks! it's all about how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go. i have never spent as much money drag racing as i spent on street rods. i don't pay licenses', insurance or as much gas to go racing as i do a street rod every year. even my trailer is permanently licensed and my truck is on a nonop. i just get a 1 day trip permit to drive it when i tow my car to the drags. an altered is the cheapest way to go fast. if your going to run a doorslammer i have to agree with you on expenses, though. it takes alot more motor and money to make 3500+ lbs go fast!!

Does anyone out there know this car ???? "Quick Silver III" It's a 1968 Olds F-85, and the picture was taken at the 1969 "World of Wheels" car show at the Pittsburgh Civic Center. I am looking for any pictures of it at the Drags. The car was from "Ferrante Oldsmobile" in Vandergrift PA. which is around the Pittsburgh PA. area, and ran at Keystone Dragway in New alexandria PA. as it's local track. The builder/driver was Anthony Ferrante. I know it ran at some tracks in the eastern Ohio area, and also at some West Virginia tracks also. It was a 455 olds powered which was Hilborne injected. Of course it was painted a Silver "metal flake", with black lace and other black accented trim. I know the car ran during the 1969 and 1970 time period, and was later destroyed in a crash of some type. So any more information on this great looking Olds would really be appreciated. I know the picture write-up says "Ferranti", but that is a typo, as it is really "Ferrante".
    Thanks,
    azscotty

The newer one looks like a hat, only with strange colors for a hat. But I like to watch them, at least on a 1/4 mile. Don't know about the 1000 f deal from a spectators point of view

  8. I think the recent surge in nostalgia funny car racin says it all.

I agree 100%. I also have a Bantam. You can go to the track on a Wed night and for 20 bucks you can make all the passes time will allow and even race your buddy if you want. On weekends for about $50 entry you can race for $1000 to win. Like you said, There are alot of nostagia events going on around the country.
I built an altered to go fast cheap. It's a car I can unload, race, and load by myself. My brother has a 240" rear engine dragster that takes at least 2 people just to load. I bought the car less engine for $7800. Then bought a complete, carb to pan, Dynoed, broken in, and shipped to my door 468 for $5000.
    BTW got any pics?

Very nice. Dollar per MPH, these were one of the best values in drag racing. Up until about 1968 or so, with standard 301" Chevy, these cars could their own against any and all, but a top fueler. And if you were to bore/stroke the motor, you could run with a fueler as well. At least until just before the advent of the slipper clutch, better tires AKA, the new found "smokeless era."

Floored, far be it from me to give you guys a history lesson about your own stuff, but the "dude in the Coke pants" is Larry Sutton, who was THE starter at Lions Dragstrip.:)

That funny cars body style is a Mustang II...Lions closed in Dec. '72....and that sure doesn't look anything like LIONS...
what do you think? (might as well nit-pik this to death...:))

I would have to agreee that the early to late seventies served as an era where the funnies took on an appearance that was never really matched. While the bodies featured proportions that were distorted from their OEM counterparts, they were still easily identifiable. And paint schemes and air brushing that were rendered to provide beauty and individuality reached their zenith.
