  1. This has to be one of the wildest sidewinders ever. Ted Cyr built this one with a blown SBC on fuel. The rear axle was so narrow, the slicks almost touched each other. The first night he brought it out to Fontana, the "experts" said it wouldn't work. "Curly" had the last laugh. He wound up running over 180 with it before he was through.

You know, it does look the same, doesn't it. We'll have to compare some photos. May be..."drag racers and hot rodders...the first recyclers"

Will have to look at the Drag News CD's..anyone know when, approximately, the track closed? As I remember, the fuel altereds were just starting to hit the big time right about then.

  5. Jim Nelson in Jockos streamliner, Riverside, Memorial Day, 1959. Jim ran an astounding 8.35 at 178 when, at the time, Garlits had not run under 8.50. They were running Emery Cook's motor, and everyone thought they were geniuses. Actually, the clutch disc had fried on the previous run, and the tires just hooked up because the clutch didn't jerk them loose. They stumbled onto the slider clutch, and didn't know it! :D

  9. Chuck Griffith in the SOHC Ford PVTA Starlight V top fueler. I believe this was the last of the Starlight dragsters run by the Pomona club that promoted the races at the Pomona Fairgrounds before NHRA ran them out. Those were the really good old days, when a car club could earn enough promoting a weekly drag race to field a competitive top fueler. :)

  13. Cub Barnett in Charles Scott's 23 roadster in 1957. The ARDUN came out of Scotty's 201 mph lakester. The headers ran full length, and exited in 8 megaphones. What music it must have made.

  15. Another SOHC Ford powered digger. The Don Long framed Assassin was built and driven by Jim Crooke in 67. The Assassin was based in the Northwest, and is shown here making a rare trip south at LIONS in 1968. It has been fully restored, and makes occasional cackelfest appearences.

Nice shot!! Wait-Hey- that's me! I'm on the internet! Yahoo!! I have the exact opposite side shot of the red vette and willys- that's me takin a pic, and my girl up in the last row, directly above the vette's blower scoop and the POW/MIA sign. It was fun tryin to get decent shots that didn't include the wooden poles or the "PRO" photographer's butts. We drove 1700 miles round trip to make the NHRR- loved it except 2 things: 1- tryin to get a good starting line photo and 2- tryin not to get run over by the 10 million golf carts in the pits. We will be there next year, though.

Jocko Johnson is a genius. I haven't been on here in awhile. Looks like I have about 74 pages of catching up to do.

Dean the Scotty's T was sold to a guy in Illinois (a buddy of my dads), He ran it for a short time here with the Ardun in it
    [IMG]

then My Dad bought the Ardun for $1500 and put it in this

He still has it today in a WG chassis for display

If anybody by chance would know anything about the whereabouts of the Scotty's T car I would love to put the 2 back together. Last known to be in the Tenn.(Clarksville) area in the mid to late 60's Mike

Holy smokes you need to build that car....Scotty's "T" rules.

  23. A little "eccentric", but, yes he is a genius.

  24. I agree!! If the original can't be found, take that ARDUN and clone it!! Here's the rest of the pics from Gray Baskerville's Feb. '02 Hot Rod article, which is basically a reprint of the article Hot Rod did on the car in Nov. '57. It says the frame was made from teardrop shaped chrome-moly aircraft wing strut tubing. I love the basic simplicity of the design. About a hundred rules violations that wouldn't fly today, but it just shows what a simpler time the car came from. In the pic with the guys holding the body, you can see the Evans racing equipment painted on the right side. Scotty was an Evans dealer. Might have got a little help on the roadster from Earl Evans. The article says the roadster was sold to Bob Baugh, the son of a foundry owner in Illinois for $2500. I see in your pics that the ARDUN still has Scotty's stacks on the Hilborns. You need to do some serious looking for the rest of the car!! I'd pay to hear that ARDUN with those 8 megaphones on it! :D

Flamin' Frank Pedregon firing up the hides. Poor pic but still an awesome shot.
I've heard several different stories about how he set 'em on fire. Many think he used a gasoline spray and the nitro header flames caught it on fire during the pass. Anyone know for sure?

  27. We hashed that over quite a few pages back. Don't think we came up with a definative answer. Theory I heard floating around back in the day was that the rubber and nitro fumes that collected in the wheel tubs was ignited by the zoomies.

I dig that push truck. Whitewalls, black wheels, moon caps, white bumpers and grille.

    Great stuff Dean!

  29. Man. that was a DELUX pick up in 61!! There are a lot more white walls around now days than there were in the 60's. Most guys put the extra money in the race car.
