This may be an early shorter version of "Shooter" Doug Robinson's Horsepower Engineering car. The front radius rods don't match the later version but the yellow paint (both car and helmet) and the chrome roll bar do.

Walt Stevens in the "Odd Couple". Walt is still very active in the sport and is part of the crew on the Mendy Fry driven High Speed Motorsports top fueller that won this year's March Meet.

Early Don Prudhomme in his first dragster, the car that he bought from Ivo. Later the car had a Zueschel Chrysler in place of the Buick.

    Hello,
Here is Don Prudhomme at Lions Dragstrip with his newly repainted, Buick FED he got from Tommy Ivo. This was the first in a long line of race cars in his history.

I believe Rooman is right. The "Fat Man " on the helmet is Doug

    Pete,
do you know if it is true that Doug still has the car hanging in the rafters somewhere? (and your eyes are better than mine if you could read that on the helmet :) )

Doug's shop is just a few blocks from my place. The car is sitting in his back room, pretty much ready to go, I think you could just pour Nitro in it !

  21. I'm guessing that the chute itself wasn't anchored that high up at the back of the car, was it? Seems that it might cause some ill handling when the chute hit at speed. :(

  22. I still see Mike and Jeanette Carey on a regular basis and I know Bill Kessen passed a few years ago. But I've completely lost track of the other folks in this shot. Years ago I worked with Bruce Symons who was one of the owners of the track when it originally opened as Van Wert Dragway. He was a co-owner of the dealership where I work.

  23. Ill handling is putting it mildly, I would think.I hope and think the attachment was down in the usual location.I wonder why the huge cage though? At least it surrounded his head and body instead of being behind him like a lot of cars in that time.

  24. Semi OT, but I HAVE to post this 1969 funny car race at Woodburn Oregon, because I WAS THERE!
A hot summer day of NW FC racing! Here's Warren Gunthers before it became the Durachrome Bug, Volkswagen!

That's Gary McGlasson, didn't know he ever ran a Ford. I think he's still racing in SS.
