I saw that happen. But I was sitting near the starting line and that was just about in the traps, if not past them.

it was not a streamliner with the same engine configuration. it was this very car!

b&n automotive (bert peterson and noel black) of sacramento built the car to run at bonneville. they were doing exhibition runs at the digs to make some extra coin to support the car.

this shot was taken in 1969, the first year that they ran the car.

at the tender young age of 16, i joined the crew in 1970 when the car earned the name "motion I".

on the first run off the trailer we ran 352 mph in the 3rd mile with a burned piston and the chute out halfway through that mile on mickey t's 354 mph record.

two days later with a new piston noel said if it felt good he was going to hang his leg in it.

i was at the 9-mile marker with a cameracrew and was supposed to help noel out of the car.

it must have felt good because noel was legging it really hard!

the car got sidways in the 3rd timed mile (4 1/2 mile) and it did what flat-sided streamliners do when the get sideways: it flew. i could see the car over the heatwaves 4.5 miles away.

when the car returned to earth it dissintigrated, pulling noel out of the cockpit, which was one of the only pieces of the car that was still reckognizable when i reached the crashsite. when the rear engine came lose it took a frame member to which the crotch strap was fastened and noel submarined out of the still buckled belts.

a piece of the car "physically" broke the timing light at the 5-mile, after scrubbing off speed for 1/2 mile, at a speed of 417 mph. he had to be going in excess of 450 mph.

noel died several hour later in salt lake city due to massive internal injuries.

we later learned that a rear axle broke, pitching the car sideways.

I gotta disagree here. I loved this thing. I have an old Valvoline industrial film of Indy wherein the car is depicted making a pass. Car would have made a great gasser/altered class racer in later years

My Dad driving the Willys racing Huey Lemma in the Austin. This is Acto, I believe to be 1965. I still have this car and plan on restoring her.

few things are as cool as a jocko 'liner!

  29. You ought to hear the story Jocko tells about building this body for Garlits. Putting it mildly, the relationship didn't end well.

  30. The irepressible Robert "Jocko" Johnson. One of the coolest dudes you'll ever meet. Still trying to get one of those hand carved 'liners from him.
