The South end of Lions Dragstrip on the Willow Street exit/entrance. The San Pedro/Palos Verdes hilltop is able to be seen in the background, looking West.

    Hello,

Great capture by Steve Brackett. The Freight Train is headed to the big sand pit and chain gate at the Southern end of Lions Dragstrip. It is the Willow Street Emergency Exit/Entrance. It is very close to the railroad berm and crossing, near the Northern entrance to the Terminal Island Freeway. Our old Westside of Long Beach, Craftsman House was located two blocks West of Willow Sstreet and the railroad berm/bridge.

It was one thing that scared me when competing. What if my brakes did not work or did I have enough time to stop safely? Would I go crashing through to Willow Street? In one very close race driving the 58 Impala, I was lax, but happy that I came from behind to win an elimination race. I took my mind off of the close win and just let off the gas pedal. All others had turned and gone back. I was basking in the close victory and did not notice I was headed for the big sand berm and chain gate.

I started putting on the brakes and kept at it until I skidded to a sideways stop just before the sand berm. I was so embarrassed that I did not pay attention to the end of the drag strip. But, a very close victory over the others led to glow on my face, and the skidding brought me back to reality. What a dumb moment that could have led to a very embarrassing ending.

My brother was watching from the spectator's side bleachers and watched me go from behind to victory. But, the resulting lapse in brain function was worrisome to him, as he watched me/58 Impala continue to head for the sand berm.

Of course, back in the pits... it was: "What The ----?" ... Teenage trials and tribulations...
