Pictured is one of the three ‘70 Torinos Ron Pellegrini laid up. Larry Coleman ran one, as did longtime Chicago area fuel racer Dale Creasy Sr., RIP.

AA Dale Armstrong ! I remember at the Winternationals one year, he did his long, killer burnout, and as always, he backed up faster than anyone. When he was almost back to the starting line, the front end swung sideways and he came to a stop, at an angle to the centerline. Rather than jockey around in reverse, he plugged it in low gear, and made a u-turn and circled back to the starting line. As he pulled in to stage, he was met by a perturbed Buster Couch, who gave him the "slit throat" sign, and disqualified him. As a good share of his Alcohol racing, he had the field covered, so it was a big loss to the team.

Always heard Buster wouldn't put up with any nonsense, unless it was from Linda Vaughn.

3F14C69A-123F-43BE-B60A-217ACE19F835.jpeg Ron also did a 1970 442 that I believe was a one of one. It was campaigned by Herman Lesmeister running a 426 Hemi with assistance from Austin Coil.

Ohno, Lew, Gonzalez roadster approaching the starting gates/starting line at Lion's Dragstrip.

    Hey 296Ardun,

Nice set of photos from years past. History lives on with information for all of us. That photo of the “Ono, Lew, and Gonzales, blown Olds powered modified roadster at Lions, Bill Scharing photo.” is a direct throwback to when my brother and I were at Lion’s Dragstrip.

I like the capture of those guys standing at the chain link fence that was all that separated us from the action in the staging area near the starting line. It just seemed like blue nylon jackets, Levis and white T-Shirt was the standard for drag racers at the time.

Even to the attached Lion’s Dragstrip pit pass dangling from the Levi pants. Most of the time, the pit pass was on a string attached to the belt loops, but remember, the style was to remove those belt loops and Levi leather label for the extra cool look.

So, where did we put our pit passes? Why, through the metal button hole in front. We did take our jackets off, so there was a need to have the pass somewhere, as we walked around on warm/hot days/nights. The little button hole was perfect.

Currently, the Lion’s Dragstrip Museum is recreating the Ohno, Lew and Gonzalez FED from a few years later from these photos and film.

The first thing I ever won drag racing was a blue nylon jacket, awarded in lieu of a trophy - you had your choice. Since I hadn't planned on carrying around my trophy all the time I opted for the jacket. Still have it.
    Thanks for the reminder jnaki.

Hi, Junji, great memories! Yes, we threaded out pit pass string through our belt loop, or sometimes twisted around a shirt button. Ono, Lew, and Gonzales was a strong-running team, I remember them well. One of those races you never forget: Ono, Lew, and Gonzales racing the Ratican, Jackson, and Sterns Fiat altered at Lions...great race. Here is a Rudy Perez photo of the car at Riverside, 1959 ono riverside perez 59.jpg

    Hi Dave,

Nice post of the Rudy Perez photo in the pits at Riverside. It is/was a great looking race car. I looked through my Riverside Raceway files and did not find any of the Ohno, Lew and Gonzalez Roadster. That meet was such a big deal out West and there was so much eye candy all over the raceway and pits area.

When we were in the pits at Lion's Dragstrip in 1960, it was an impressive modified roadster, too.

    Thanks for the photo.

    Junji

Me too - my first new car. A red '71 Grabber with black interior and 302. I swapped in a 4-speed toploader, a Mach I rear spoiler, and Pinto black bucket seats. It had the reflective laser stripe on the side.
