I also saw that car, It must have been at the Summernationals in 86 as that was the only National Event I went to that year.

I saw the car at the Keystone National that year and had a little excitement. Gary was in the right lane and I was taking photos from behind the guardrail. Just as he cracked the throttle, there was a blower explosion and a big ball of fire. I could feel the heat from about 30 feet away. Poor old Buster got a singe.

Somewhere I have a photo, but it is buried in many boxes.

Gary Ormsby / Lee Beard had that happen to them several times that year. They eventually figured out that carbon fiber will conduct electricity, and that the cowling was too close to the magneto ground, shutting the engine off and then re-firing it if the chassis twisted just right. Switching a fuel engine off and on is never a good idea.

    I am wondering...

Is this the same guy that back in late-80's or Early-90's had a red or orange '57 with an ARIAS(sp?) motor in it. The dude looks like a relative of Sammy Hagar...
If so, I used to sell him race parts when I worked at FASTTIMES AUTOMOTIVE in Plano, Texas...Back in 1990-1993... He was/is a blast to be around.

Very nice looking ride! I've checked it out over at Pontiac Heaven before.

  20. Is it just me, or in the past 313 pages is there something missing? Somehow my memory seems to have collected these shots of key crew members in motion.

  21. Just a few more back-up wenches from my files.....

Of course the lady sitting in the funny car is my all time favorite lady drag racer and this is my all time favorite photo of her. Shirley was and is the best.
