  4. I see a post above showing the Warren Coburn Miller AA/Fueler from around 1968.
I just saw that car yesterday at the Good Guys show in Scottsdale, what a coincedence. I know it is not in motion but, thought it was appropriate to post.

  10. Dean,

Your right. I was there when Big Daddy lost part of his foot when the clutch exploded.

Actually it was the two speed transmission that exploded. It was one of the early underdrive versions that were somewhat marginal due to the way they worked--lots of stuff spinning internally at very high speeds.
What was left of the trans is on display in Big's museum in Florida.

  13. How about the poor guy in the stands that lost most of an arm. Too bad it took so long for the Kevlar blankets to be invented.

.....and now that the parts quality of the clutches and Lencos, etc ( SFI, etc) is so good, the blankets today are rarely needed though required. that is a good thing.

  15. Re Chuck G's photos. Great shots!!about the Fred Goeske funny. I was at OCIR one night in the late '70s and I recall a guy who had 2 rocket funnies there. I'm pretty sure his name was Fred Goeske. Any one know if I am right.
What a show he put on!!
    All the best from Aussieland.

  23. Here's my take on the Oct. '68 release of Steve Miller's song "Living in the USA".

"....... the right lane pulls way ahead of the Howard Cam Special, and
.... he TAKES IT! The winner ... Lefty Mudersbach on the street side"

OK, Lefty was killed in a solo run at the Irwindale, Feb 11th 1966.

This was 2-1/2 years before the Steve Miller song was released.
Wouldn't that have been a bit early for this Howard's Cam car?

If you listen to the start of the song,
it doesn't sound like fuel burning Chryslers to me.

I'd bet the sound of the cars came off one of those early 1960's albums
"The Sounds of Drag Racing" that the record company already owned the
rights to, and was easily added to the song track.

I'd always thought the race was between these two twin engine cars
    and took place about 1961:

    Right Lane: Lefty Mudersbach
    [IMG]

Left Lane: Howard Cam Twin Bear Special

I ran into Fred Goeske a while back looking for parts for my old dually. He talked me into moving some tractor trailers of his from the LAX area to the back of his shop in Canoga Park. He told me some stories about hangin with Charlie Sheen at some annual reunion party Charlie throws. This is what he's doing now. A couple neat old photos on his website.
